Mark Cuban hopes to turn prescription drug industry "upside down" www.yahoo.com/finance/news/mark-cuban-hopes-turn-prescription-164549601.html Nelson Oliveira Tue, June 28, 2022 at 12:45 PM
Billionaire investor and reality TV star Mark Cuban is now running an online pharmacy that provides low-cost generic drugs, and he's hoping the new venture will shake up the pharmaceutical industry.
Cuban, who is also owner of the NBA's Dallas Mavericks and one of the investors on the show "Shark Tank," said in a "CBS Mornings" interview Tuesday that the goal is to combat America's skyrocketing drug prices by offering a service with no middle men or huge markups.
The Mark Cuban Cost Plus Drug Company currently offers more than 800 generic drugs, but he plans to add name brand medications as well. www.cbsnews.com/video/mark-cuban-launches-affordable-online-pharmacy/?ftag=YHF4eb9d17
"Once we get there, we really think we can disrupt and turn the pharmaceutical industry upside down," Cuban said.
Americans spend about $365 billion a year for prescription drugs, and prices are much higher than in many other countries. A 2021 Gallup poll found that 18 million Americans, or 7% of U.S. adults, can't afford to pay for needed medication. www.cbsnews.com/news/prescription-drug-prices-afford-18-million-americans/?ftag=YHF4eb9d17
Cuban said he's able to keep prices low by buying directly from manufacturers. The new website, costplusdrugs.com, charges a 15% markup, a $3 handling fee and $5 for shipping.
"We all know people who've had to make decisions between their rent and food and medication, or they've had to ration their medication. And that's just wrong in the United States of America in 2022," Cuban said.
The idea for the business came from the company's co-founder, Dr. Alex Oshmyansky, who once emailed Cuban to discuss creating a pharmacy that would sell rare drugs at a lower cost.
"I was like, 'Why limit it to rare drugs? Let's build a company, and rather than work within the traditional system, let's work outside of it and just have complete transparency,'" Cuban said.
The Pittsburgh native said he hopes the pharmacy will eventually become the place to go for "every medication on the planet."
"Look, I'm the luckiest guy in the world, and to be able to find something that can change people's lives for the better, why wouldn't I?" Cuban said. "My next dollar is not going to change my life, one way or the other. It's not going to make a difference for my children, or their children, or their children... But to be able to make medicine affordable, that's a game changer."

costplusdrugs.com/medications/ "Everyone should have safe, affordable medicines with transparent prices." – Mark CubanA letter from Mark Cuban
We started Mark Cuban Cost Plus Drug Company because every American should have access to safe, affordable medicines. If you don’t have insurance or have a high deductible plan, you know that even the most basic medications can cost a fortune. Many people are spending crazy amounts of money each month just to stay healthy. No American should have to suffer or worse - because they can’t afford basic prescription medications.
If you are fortunate enough to have health insurance with a low deductible, the high cost of drugs is driving up the premiums that you or your employer pay, making getting health insurance expensive and challenging.
The Mark Cuban Cost Plus Drug Company takes these problems head on.
Shockingly, in the USA, it’s not unusual for disadvantaged populations to suffer from rampant outbreaks of hookworm. Normally the drug prescribed for hookworm, Albendazole, can cost as much as $500 per course, making the drug out of reach for many in need. So we started off by donating more than 10,000 tablets of Albendazole to cure parasitic infections in the most affected areas of the southern US.
Our goal is to dramatically reduce the cost of drugs like Albendazole, but we also think that it is just as important to introduce transparency to the pricing of drugs so patients know they are getting a fair price.
Our cost for Albendazole is $26.08 per course. We mark that price up by 15% so we can continue to run the company and invest in disrupting the pricing of as many drugs as we possibly can.
That makes the base price of the drug $30. Then we add on the actual cost, $3.00, that our pharmacy partners charge us to prepare and provide your prescription to you.
That makes the sales price on this website $33. Far, far lower than the pricing available in the marketplace.
Every product we sell is priced exactly the same way: our cost plus 15%, plus the pharmacy fee, if any. When you get your medicine from Cost Plus Drug Co., you’ll always know exactly how we arrived at the price you pay. And as we grow and our costs go down, we will always pass those savings on to you!
We started this company as an effort to disrupt the drug industry and to do our best to end ridiculous drug prices. Thanks for your support, and please let us know what you think!

Mark Cuban: 'No one should have to choose between food, rent, or medicine' www.yahoo.com/finance/news/mark-cuban-startup-prescription-drugs-health-care-134954044.html Adriana Belmonte·Senior Editor Tue, August 23, 2022 at 9:49 AM
The recently passed Inflation Reduction Act may finally start to rein in prescription drug costs. www.yahoo.com/finance/news/big-pharma-argument-drug-prices-rep-katie-porter-183743891.html
Billionaire Mark Cuban took action long before this by investing in Cost Plus Drugs, a company created by Alexander Oshmyansky. The online pharmacy offers prescription drugs directly to consumers at significantly marked-down prices. www.markcubancostplusdrugcompany.com/ costplusdrugs.com/
“Our mission is to be the fully transparent, low-cost provider of medications for all patients,” Cuban told Yahoo Finance over email. “No one should have to choose between food, rent, or medicine.”
According to Cost Plus Drugs’ website, the online pharmacy “fills and delivers prescriptions at our cost + a fixed 15% margin." The prescriptions are then fulfilled by accredited facilities and shipped to patients nationwide, with the aim of a “seamless consumer experience.” www.markcubancostplusdrugcompany.com/
“By delivering transparency and low costs for drugs, we hope to make health care a little more understandable for everyone,” Cuban said.
data.bls.gov/pdq/SurveyOutputServlet
How it works
Consumers can access Cost Plus Drugs directly on its website or through employer-sponsored programs.
To use the online pharmacy, consumers simply search for their medication on the Cost Plus Drugs website, ask their doctor to send the prescription to a pharmacy partner, and receive their medications by mail. costplusdrugs.com/medications/
There are currently more than 150 of the most in-demand generic medications available, and the online pharmacy is aiming to increase to more than 1,500 generic medications within the next six months. However, it has yet to break into the brand-name market of drugs still under patent. www.cnbc.com/2022/07/28/mark-cuban-pharmacy-cost-plus-drugs-struggling-with-brand-name-drugs.html
The company is scheduled to open a 22,000 square-foot fill-finish facility in Dallas in the fourth quarter of 2022 that is designed to “respond rapidly to drug shortages and price hikes.”
Additionally, according to the website, Cost Plus Drugs is “also working with trade name manufacturers to add both single source brands and specialty biologics to our pharmacy.” www.markcubancostplusdrugcompany.com/
costplusdrugs.com/medications/
The drug with the biggest savings through Cost Plus Drugs is Imatinib, a generic for Gleevec that’s used to treat leukemia. One tablet typically costs $2,502.50 but can be purchased through Cost Plus Drugs for just $14.40 (a difference of $2,488.10).
Other drugs with major savings include Omeprazole-Sodium Bicarbonate (a Proton-pump inhibitor), Dimethyl Fumarate (used to treat multiple sclerosis), Valcyte (an antiviral medication), and Ampyra (a multiple sclerosis drug). Together, these drugs combine for $9,384.67 in savings through Cost Plus Drugs.
Cost Plus Drugs does not currently accept insurance, though Cuban said the company is "working on being able to work with insurers while still maintaining our low pricing."
'Numerous bad actors'
There are several organizations that target eliminating medical debt, but few have tried tackling one of the main sources, which is the cost of prescription drugs. www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/mark-cuban-cost-plus-drug-companys-online-pharmacy-launches-with-lowest-prices-on-100-lifesaving-prescriptions-301463491.html
According to NiceRx, health care costs are projected to reach $6.2 trillion by 2028, with prescription drugs accounting for 10% of the spending. www.nicerx.com/prescription-drug-report-2022/
Oshmyansky attributed these rising costs to “bad actors” in the industry.
“There are numerous bad actors in the pharmaceutical supply chain preventing patients from gettindg affordable medicines,” Oshmyansky stated when Cost Plus Drugs officially launched.

Cuban declined to mention any company by name.
The company’s website singles out pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) because of their role in determining drug prices. PBMs are "third-party companies that act as intermediaries between insurance providers and pharmaceutical manufacturers," according to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners. They also "create formularies, negotiate rebates (discounts paid by a drug manufacturer to a PBM) with manufacturers, process claims, create pharmacy networks, review drug utilization, and occasionally manage mail-order specialty pharmacies." content.naic.org/cipr-topics/pharmacy-benefit-managers
Cost Plus Drugs works by eliminating the middlemen — in this case, pharmacy benefit managers — to negotiate directly with drug manufacturers for the best price possible. costplusdrugs.com/
And while the online pharmacy currently doesn’t work with Medicare — a key component affected by the Inflation Reduction Act — Cuban said that he sees an opportunity to do so. www.americanprogress.org/article/how-the-inflation-reduction-act-reduces-health-care-costs/

Currently through Medicare, most plans have a coverage gap that temporarily limits how much is covered for prescription drugs. Those in that donut hole are responsible for up to 25% of overall costs. www.medicare.gov/drug-coverage-part-d/costs-for-medicare-drug-coverage/costs-in-the-coverage-gap
For those on non-Medicare plans, Cuban said, whether or not there will be significant cost savings through Cost Plus Drugs depends on a patient’s deductible.
“For most people, we will be cheaper than their copay,” he said.
So far, neither the pharmaceutical industry nor the health insurance industry has responded to the company’s business plan. In any case, Cuban is hopeful that his company is the start of more competitive pricing among pharmaceutical drugs.
“Our mission is to be the low-cost provider of medications,” Cuban said. “As of now, we can best do that by selling direct to patients.”

Then, we show you exactly how much you’ll pay for us to keep our business running and how much it will cost to prepare and ship your prescription.
My provider sent me here. What do I do next? Just sign up for an account and the prescription from your doctor will be connected to your account. Then, our pharmacy partner will notify you when you’re ready to checkout and get your medications delivered.
Can I use my insurance? Currently, we only accept prescription insurance for Rightway. However, we will be adding more insurance plans in the coming months.
Does Mark Cuban really own this company? Yes! Investor Mark Cuban and CEO Dr. Alexander Oshmyansky strongly believe that every American should have access to safe, affordable medicines. Many Americans are spending crazy amounts of money each month just to stay healthy. We know there’s a better way. We work with Truepill, our trusted fulfillment partner to fill your prescriptions from their network of accredited pharmacies. Truepill's team of licensed pharmacists will ensure your medication is safely dispensed and shipped to you, and they are available 24/7 for consultations or questions about your medication. To learn more about our mission and how Mark Cuban has been involved, check out (costplusdrugs.com/mission).
Who fills my prescription? We work with Truepill pharmacy, our trusted fulfillment partner to fill your prescriptions. Truepill has a team of accredited pharmacists who will ensure your medication is safe and delivered to your doorstep on time.
Can I get all my medications here? For now, we only offer a set amount of medications. To see all medications we currently offer, please go to costplusdrugs.com/medications. We will be expanding this list regularly so if you don't see your medication, please sign up for our newsletter to be updated when we add new medications.
Who do I contact if I have questions? You can reach out to us via the form on the Contact Us page.
How do you determine the retail price? The retail price listed on our website is an average of retail prices across other pharmacies that is sourced from third-party data. This information is published at the time we add the medication so may not reflect current market prices.
How is your 15% markup calculated? We calculate our 15% markup based on the per-pill price that we pay to purchase drugs from our suppliers.
Often our per-pill cost from a supplier may have many decimal points. For example, a pill may cost us 2.4568 cents.
This per-pill cost is the amount we multiply times 15 percent to get our 15% mark-up. We always round up that mark-up amount to the nearest whole cent. So our 15% mark-up is never less than 1 cent per pill.
So if our actual per-pill cost is 2.4568 cents, we multiply that number times 0.15, which gives us a mark-up of 0.036852 cents per pill. We round this number up to the nearest cent to get a final per-pill mark-up of 1 cent.
Because we round up our per-pill mark-up to the nearest cent, our margin may be slightly more than 15% at times.
To get the total per-pill price including our mark-up, we take the per-pill cost and round up or down to the nearest cent, then add the final per-pill markup from above.
So in this example, the total per-pill price would be 2 cents + 1 cent = 3 cents or $0.03.
We then multiply that number times the number of pills you have been prescribed and add our flat $3 pharmacy labor fee and $5 standard shipping to get the total price you'll pay for your prescription.
So in our example, for a 90-pill prescription, you would pay $0.03 x 90 + $3 + $5 = $10.70.
Why are you working with insurance companies, Managed Care Organizations (MCO), and Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBM)? We are working with select groups to give you additional options to pay for your prescriptions. However, the price of your prescription will always be less than or equal to the Cost Plus retail price. Working with these groups allows claims to be submitted to your pharmacy insurance plan which could possibly apply towards your personal deductible or out of pocket maximum and clinical profiles. Your insurance provider may also provide clinical management for the medications you take. By having your claim sent to your insurance provider, they can better manage your condition.

I recently used this service and found my prescription costs were a FRACTION of what I would have paid at the pharmacy. I then cancelled my pharmacy order. Because this is a mail order business it will take longer to get your prescription than just going to the local pharmacy. You can speed up delivery if you wish to pay extra. Check with your doctors office to see if they will allow you to use this. Some offices won't. They have a few options on how the doctor can send the prescription. It is not that difficult and any doctor's office worth their salt should be willing to order like this. If you are worried about porch pirates look into other ways to take delivery as there are many.
