Ornithologists who have studied turkey vultures say that the long-winged, sharp-eyed raptors can detect the scent of a corpse from over a mile away within a few hours of death.
In other words, Mother Nature’s avian undertakers, the world’s most morbidly efficient, high-flying, hook-billed scavengers, have nothing on American politicians.
Just a few hours after the bodies of 51 or so migrants were found in and around an abandoned tractor-trailer outside San Antonio, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott blamed President Joe Biden for the deaths.
Abbott tweeted: “These deaths are on Biden. They are the result of his deadly open border policy.”
What about the last time this happened?
In politics, as in nature, one circling vulture attracts others. So it was not long before a gruesome flock of Republican politicians chimed in.

Among them was Arizona’s own Rep. Andy Biggs, who said, “What Biden, (Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro) Mayorkas, and Democrats refuse to acknowledge is that securing the border will save lives.”
Texas Sen. Ted Cruz dashed out a tweet saying, “How many more people have to die before Dems give a damn?”
Tennessee Sen. Marsha Blackburn said, “There is nothing compassionate about the Biden administration’s open border policy.”
Fast money: How smugglers are luring US teens to transport migrants

Authorities work the scene after an abandoned tractor-trailer was found in San Antonio Monday. At least 51 people died and several others remained hospitalized in what officials are calling likely the nation's deadliest smuggling incident on record.
You’d think something like this, hidden migrants dying from heat in a cargo carrier with no refrigeration, had never happened before?
Except, it did. And in the same place.
And, as it turns out, neither Gov. Abbott or any of the other Republicans blamed then-President Donald Trump in 2017 when a truck driver was arrested (and later sentenced to life in prison) after his 18-wheeler was found to be packed with migrants, 10 of whom had died from the heat. Many others were hospitalized. This also happened during the summer in San Antonio. www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/fianc-e-truck-driver-accused-deadly-human-smuggling-case-he-n786451
The ugly fallacy of 'open borders'
Biden issued a statement condemning the GOP vultures.
He said, “Exploiting vulnerable individuals for profit is shameful, as is political grandstanding around tragedy, and my administration will continue to do everything possible to stop human smugglers and traffickers from taking advantage of people who are seeking to enter the United States between ports of entry.”
Desperate people do desperate things, particularly when desperate measures are required to achieve what they want to achieve.
Like a better life for themselves and their families.
If, as Gov. Abbott and others said, President Biden has an “open border policy,” then despairing men, women and children seeking entry to the United States would not have to risk their lives locked into the suffocating cargo carrier of a semi-trailer truck.
In a horribly tragic way, the aftermath of what happened in San Antonia illustrates the biggest stumbling block to finding a workable compromise within our politically charged, hyperbole-driven immigration debate.
The problem isn’t open borders.
It’s closed minds.
