Linda Ronstadt returned to Japan in 1981 to participate in a major West Coast Rock event. Introducing an original recording of a new excavation where you can experience the site.
It is “September 11, 1981 Yokohama Stadium performance” that is imbued with such a work. This is an excellent audience recording recorded in the first act of “THE CALIFORNIA LIVE” held at two venues in Yokohama and Osaka. Speaking of “THE CALIFORNIA LIVE Yokohama”, the 4CD “YOKOHAMA STADIUM 1981 (Zion-134)”, which permanently preserves all 4 groups that appeared with transcendental sound, is also new to my memory, but this work is recorded completely differently. .. It is a new master that will be released for the first time in the world.
And what is surprising is the sound. Anyway, there is no sense of distance and it is super clear! Each instrument is neatly separated without being mixed one by one, and the outline is clear and clear. When it comes to Linda’s singing voice, she’s so full of real voice that she thinks she’s blowing directly into a tapered microphone, and even her breathing is clear.
Of course, the factor is probably the equipment / technique of the recorder, but in addition, the venue seems to be large. As you know, Yokohama Stadium is an open space with no roof or ceiling that reflects sound. You can directly pick up the sound output without the blurring element of the hall sound. However, that doesn’t mean it’s as easy as saying, “If you’re outdoors, it’s definitely a great recording.” Since it is difficult to control the sound, if there is a distance from the PA, it will be squishy at once, and if the sound is swept by the wind or the wind sound itself enters, it will be ruined. However, there is no such negative factor in this work. It makes full use of the outdoor flavor of “It’s difficult, but if you can record it well, it will be the best.”
The brilliant clear sound is drawn with a treasure chest filled with famous songs from the heyday, centered on “MAD LOVE”, which was a big hit in Japan. Speaking of Linda in the early 80’s, “LIVE IN HOLLYWOOD” excavated in 2019 comes to mind, but the set of this work is similar and different.
Let’s organize by comparing here.
● Heart Like a Wheel (4 songs)
・ Willin ’/ I Can’t Help It (If I’m Still in Love With You) (★) / Faithless Love / You’re No Good
● Only one dream (3 songs)
・ It’s So Easy / Blue Bayou / Poor Poor Pitiful Me
● Gekiai (5 songs)
・ Mad Love (★) / Party Girl (★) / I Can’t Let Go / Hurt So Bad / How Do I Make You
● Others (2 songs)
・ Don’t Cry Now: Desperado
・ Miss America: Back In The U.S.A.
* Note: The “★” mark is a song that cannot be heard even on the official version “LIVE IN HOLLYWOOD”.
… And it looks like this. Not only the set but also the back is very similar to “LIVE IN HOLLYWOOD”, but it is still different. Since it was shared with James Taylor and JD Souther on the day, Waddy Wachtel and Leland Sklar also participated. In “I Can’t Let Go,” Rosemary Butler sings with Linda.
To be honest, the 4-disc set “YOKOHAMA STADIUM 1981 (Zion-134)”, which also realized permanent preservation, was introduced by Uxbridge because it was so miraculous, but originally this work was also pressed. It is a name recording that should be done. For those who love the West Coast sound and want to experience the full event, “Zion-134” is definitely for you, but for those who say “4 discs are too heavy” and “I’m not interested in anything other than Linda”. One piece that you can easily enjoy. Of course, it is a must-have live album for collectors who want to enjoy a big event from another seat. Please enjoy it to your heart’s content.
★ The best audience recording of “September 11, 1981 Yokohama Stadium Performance” that participated in the big event of West Coast Rock. It is a completely separate recording from the press 4CD “YOKOHAMA STADIUM 1981 (Zion-134)”, and it is super clear without any sense of distance! Each instrument is neatly separated without being mixed one by one, and the outline is clear and clear. Linda’s singing voice is full of real voice that makes me think that it is directly infused. Official excavation board “LIVE IN HOLLY” such as “Mad Love” “Party Girl” “I Can’t Help It (If I’m Still in Love With You)”
