Linda Ronstadt up on the roof in NYC (1970). The Jefferson Market Library clock tower in New York City is behind Linda which the Mamas and Papas song "Twelve-Thirty" is about.
"Twelve-Thirty"- w/Lyrics- The Mamas and Papas
The last major hit for the Mamas and Papas. A song John Phillips wrote in 1967 about what was happening in California during the "Summer of Love".
Mamas & Papas John and Michelle Phillips were staying at the Albert Hotel on East 10th St. and they could see the Jefferson Market Library clock tower from their window. The clock was broken, stuck at 12:30, and it inspired John to write "Twelve Thirty (Young Girls Are Coming to the Canyon)"--"Outside my window was a steeple/with a clock that always said 12:30." That historic clock was originally restarted on October 16, 1960. The song was released in 1967, lucky for us it didn't keep time very well.

(18) The “Twelve-Thirty” Metaphor

Then one day I suddenly knew what it was about. The entire song is a metaphor for coming out of depression.
I used to live in New York City;
Everything there was dark and dirty.
Outside my window was a steeple
With a clock that always said twelve-thirty.
*
Young girls are coming to the canyon,
And in the mornings I can see them walking.
I can no longer keep my blinds drawn,
And I can’t keep myself from talking.
*
At first so strange to feel so friendly –
To say good morning and really mean it –
To feel these changes happening in me,
But not to notice till I feel it.
*
Young girls are coming to the canyon,
And in the mornings I can see them walking.
I can no longer keep my blinds drawn,
And I can’t keep myself from talking.
*
Cloudy waters cast no reflection;
Images of beauty lie there stagnant.
Vibrations bounce in no direction,
And lie there shattered into fragments.
*
Young girls are coming to the canyon…
