Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) abruptly walked off from a British journalist’s questions about gun violence in America two days after an elementary school massacre in his state left 19 children and two adults dead.
Cruz, who is due to appear at a National Rifle Association convention this weekend, became incensed when pressed on gun laws and why mass shootings “only happen in America.”
Cruz was attending a vigil for the victims of the Robb Elementary School shooting when he was grilled by Sky News reporter Mark Stone about overhauling gun laws in the U.S. The senator began by dismissing calls for reform by saying “It’s easy to go to politics.” He added: “The proposals the Democrats have? None of them would have stopped this.” (Cruz had earlier called to “harden schools” by fitting in new bulletproof glass and only having “one door into and out of the school” during a Fox News interview.)
But when Stone asked why there was an “American exceptionalism” when it comes to mass shootings, Cruz decided to wrap things up in a hurry. “I’m sorry you think American exceptionalism is awful,” he said, patting the reporter on the chest, adding: “You know what? You’ve got your political agenda, God love you,” before walking away from the TV crew.
Stone went after Cruz, saying he “can’t answer” why mass shootings are a uniquely American problem. Visibly angry, Cruz replied: “Why is it that people come from all over the world to America? ‘Cause it’s the freest, most prosperous, safest country on earth. Stop being a propagandist,” before heading for the exit once again.
‘He Came in and Shot Her’: Fourth-Grade Uvalde Survivor Reveals Chilling Encounter With Gunman
Cruz was at the vigil alongside Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, who is also still set to appear at the NRA’s annual meeting in Houston this week. The pair have faced calls to withdraw from the event—which will also host former President Donald Trump—including from Abbott’s gubernatorial Democratic election rival Beto O’Rourke. O’Rourke was thrown out of a press conference Wednesday after he heckled Abbott and Cruz for “doing nothing” to prevent school shootings. “Somebody needs to stand up for the children of this state or they will continue to be killed just like they were killed in Uvalde yesterday,” O’Rourke was heard saying before his ejection. Daniel Defense, the manufacturer of one of the weapons used in the Texas mass killing, has withdrawn from the NRA convention.
The massacre at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde on Tuesday is the worst school shooting in the U.S. since the massacre at Sandy Hook in Connecticut in 2012. Just days after his 18th birthday, the Uvalde gunman had legally bought two AR-15-style rifles and hundreds of rounds of ammunition a week before the slaughter.

Sky News journalist Mark Stone confronted Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) about the number of mass shootings in the United States, asking the Republican senator why such incidents “only happen in your country?”
“Is this the moment to reform gun laws?” Stone asked Cruz, who is in Texas this week following the mass shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde that left 19 children and two teachers dead.
“You know, it’s easy to go to politics,” Cruz responded.
“But it’s important, it’s at the heart of the issue,” Stone interjected.
“I get that that is where the media likes to go,” Cruz said, to which Stone replied that he and other journalists covering the shooting have talked to community members about reforming gun laws, saying it is where they would “like to go.”
“The proposals from Democrats and the media,” Cruz started again, “inevitably when some violent psychopath murders people—”
Stone interrupted Cruz, saying “a violent psychopath who’s able to get a weapon so easily. An 18-year-old with two AR-15s.”
The shooter in Tuesday’s attack legally purchased guns shortly after his 18th birthday, authorities have said.
“But why does this only happen in your country?” Stone asked Cruz. “I really think that’s what many people around the world cannot fathom, why only in America. Why is this American exceptionalism so awful?”
Cruz continued to push back on the reporter, saying, “I’m sorry you think American exceptionalism is so awful. You know what, you’ve got your political agenda, God love you,” before walking away.
The shooting at Robb Elementary School has renewed calls from Democrats and activists for Congress to pass meaningful gun reform legislation, efforts that Republicans have consistently resisted.
Cruz is one of several prominent Republicans who plan to attend the National Rifle Association’s annual meeting this weekend in Houston.

Ted Cruz stormed away from a reporter who asked him about gun control in the wake of the massacre that killed 21 people, including 19 small children, in Uvalde, Texas.
“Is this the moment to reform gun laws,” Mark Stone of Sky News asked the senator from Texas in Uvalde on Wednesday.

“You know, it’s easy to go to politics,” an annoyed Cruz responded, adding gun control is where “the media likes to go” after mass shootings.
“It’s not,” Stone said. “It’s where many of the people we’ve talked to here like to go.”
Accusing anyone raising the issue of gun control of playing politics after a mass shooting has become an all-too-common cop-out among Republicans like Cruz who have gladly taken big money from gun rights groups. Meanwhile, Cruz and others have spent the days since the shooting hurling attacks at Democrats and the media. “The proposals from Democrats and the media?” Cruz continued on Wednesday. “Inevitably, when some violent psychopath murders people … if you want to stop violent crime, the proposals the Democrats have? None of them would have stopped this.”
Cruz did not mention that the 18-year-old gunman had legally bought two assault rifles days earlier, which legislation introduced three years ago called the Age 21 Act would have prohibited.
Stone kept pushing, asking, “Why only in America? Why is this American exceptionalism so awful?”
“You know, I’m sorry you think American exceptionalism is awful,” Cruz replied, not seeming to understand the reporter’s implication that the U.S. being an exception can actually be bad. “You’ve got your political agenda. God love you.”
Cruz then abruptly walked away. Stone and another reporter kept pressing him about why mass shootings are more common in the United States than other first world countries. “Stop being a propagandist,” Cruz snapped.
Cruz’s aversion to gun reform has led him to propose several absurd solutions to the mass shooting epidemic. He’s joined many on the right by pushing measures to “harden schools,” including by having just “one door into and out of the school” with “armed police officers” guarding it. He doesn’t seem to have considered that this would be a fire hazard, that it would prevent people inside schools from escaping should a shooter breach the single entrance, or that it’s simply flat-out impractical.
Cruz’s relationship to the gun lobby may have something to do with why he’s squirming at questions about gun control. He’s received more money from gun groups than any other member of Congress. He’s also scheduled to speak at the National Rifle Association’s annual conference on Friday, just a few hundred miles away from Uvalde.
