Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows only two states and New York City have lost a larger share of their population to the virus than Arizona has since the start of the pandemic.
In all, nearly 24,000 Arizonan lives have been lost to COVID-19.
The pace of fatalities in the state remains extremely high. According to the CDC, Arizona has recently been reporting nearly seven deaths per 100,000 people per week, a rate more than twice as high as the national average.
