Anyone with half a brain will add this to their medicine chest asap.
WHAT IS LOMATIUM?
Lomatium dissectum is a plant that grows on the eastern side of the Sierra-Nevada mountains. It is part of the parsley family. Several western Native American tribes used the root of this plant as medicine to treat many different health problems, calling it “the Dortza”, which translates to “heap powerful medicine.”
During the sweeping flu outbreak in 1917-1918, the root was used by two Washoe Native American tribes and shockingly no deaths occurred from the influenza outbreak while others around were “dying like flies.”
After an assigned physician from the U.S government saw this, he asked to use this on some of his patients and he said, “They just stopped dying.”
The Journal of Bacteriology stated in 1944, “The antibiotic activity of oil factions separated from the root of Lomatium dissectum was determined on 62 strains and species of bacteria, molds and fungi. The heat-stable active agent was bactericidal for gram-positive bacteria at 10-4 dilutions and at 10-3 for gram-negative bacteria.” (Journal of Bacteriology, Vol. 55 No. 5 May 1948)

2 THINGS YOU MUST KNOW ABOUT LOMATIUM
Lomatium has been kept a virtual secret it seems. However, when I approached my functional medicine doctor about it, she was aware of it and said she loves using it. And so far, I completely agree with her.
However, there are two things I feel like you must know about Lomatium.
1. Lomatium- A Powerful Antiviral
Lomatium is known to be a powerful antiviral. It also works against mold, fungal, and some bacteria activity. However, Lomatium is especially focused on viruses of the respiratory tract. It functions as a mild expectorant and helps to thin congestion.
If you are someone who easily gets infected with respiratory illness (I am!), then Lomatium can be an extremely valuable antiviral for you. The antiviral components of Lomatium are excreted through your lung mucosa.
Lomatium is known to be able to stop the cold virus, influenza, respiratory viruses, and even control or kill chronic viruses. Read more information at Lomatium Root: Possibly the Best Anti-Viral.
2. Lomatium Detox Rash
A small percentage of people (lucky me!) will end up with what is thought to be a one time “detox” rash. This is a measles-like rash that will generally cover your entire body. Although, for some it will only show on one part of your body.
It is itchy and progresses over several days. Mine started 11 days after beginning Lomatium and continued for 11 days before fading out completely. Antihistamines are said to not work on this rash (I did not try them) and it will not appear again if you continue to use Lomatium.
Many think of it as an exanthem type rash (think viral chicken pox or roseola!) that shows up as the body is relieved of a viral, bacterial or fungal toxin load. You body uses your skin as a detox vehicle to quickly relieve itself of these toxins.
The lomatium detox rash is said to be a healing crisis. You can read more about this Lomatium Dissectum Detox Rash Information. barlowherbal.com/blogs/blog/lomatium-dissectum-detox-rash-information
MY EXPERIENCE WITH LOMATIUM
Outside of my shocking Lomatium rash, my experience was quite impressive. I am excited to see how it continues to perform next time one of my toddlers comes home with another cold this winter.
I ended up trying two different types of Lomatium and I liked them both. The first one was LDM-100 by Barlow Herbal which is a Lomatium dissectum only tincture. I could tell it was a very powerful formulation and will continue to use this in the future.

And the second type that I tried was by Herb Pharm called Virattack Herbal Formula. This formula was also a good product and implements a different strategy by using other herbs to support the antiviral attack.

I feel like it should be mentioned that this formula also contains several other ingredients. For example, St. John’s wort can cause some medications to be less effective, therefore, may not be a good match for everyone.
Since taking the Lomatium, I feel more clear headed and it did fight off the virus I felt I was coming down with. I never ended up getting sick!
While I didn’t notice the effect of it being a mild expectorant during the day, at night when I would lay down to sleep I would feel the expectorant working in my lungs.
Since it was breaking up the congestion in my lungs, it caused me to cough which definitely annoyed my husband who was also trying to sleep. After this, I found it was better not to take it at night and the cough subsided.
However, 3 weeks later I found I could take it at night and no longer had this problem, so I am assuming it cleared out whatever congestion I had in my lungs.
While I had my lomatium rash, I mostly stopped taking it to allow my body to fully detox. And it made me feel better to stop while sporting the ugly rash.
Also, I started taking some dandelion root to help my body detox. I found that I was very thirsty so I was drinking a ton of water. I tend to do this normally, but during the rash I consumed much more.
To soothe my itchy skin I took several calming epsom salt baths at night.
Even though I was one of the few that developed this lovely rash, I will definitely continue to use Lomatium in the future (as well as olive leaf extract). I really feel like it’s important to help your body fight illness without causing harm to the good bacteria in your body.

Plus, I was super impressed that I didn’t get sick!
Please consult your doctor or health professional if you decide to use Lomatium. I hope my experience can help you as you make informed decisions to support your health in the future.
I would love to hear if anyone has any experience with Lomatium to share!
