Third of Type 2 diabetes cases can be reversed with ‘soup and shakes’ diet

More than a third of people with Type 2 diabetes can reverse it with a “soup and shakes” diet, a major study has found.
The analysis, by University College London and Aston University, found that low calorie meal replacement regimes were the most effective diets to put the condition into remission.
Researchers said diet changes aimed at remission should be the “primary treatment goal” for those treating patients with diabetes because they could achieve dramatic results.
In total, 36 per cent of those who swapped their normal eating habits for the strict diets were able to trigger such changes and maintain remission for two years.
Other diets were also examined in the analysis of 90 research papers published in the Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics.
A low carbohydrate diet had a significant impact, putting 17.6 per cent into remission. In both cases, the more weight dieters lost, the greater the impact on the chances of reversing diabetes.
Researchers said the studies suggested that certain groups – including those who are younger, male and have had Type 2 diabetes for less than six years – were the most likely to be able to achieve remission.
Mediterranean and low fat diets were also able to help people achieve remission, but at much lower rates of 10.5 per cent and 4.6 per cent respectively, the analysis found.
Researchers said the amount of weight loss achieved was the key factor, with the best diet being one “that you’re likely to stick to”. Weight loss of at least a stone and a half was associated with remission, researchers said.
Britain’s obesity crisis has driven record levels of diabetes, which now affects one in 10 people over 40. In total, there are almost four million people diagnosed with the condition in the UK – a doubling in the past two decades. Nine in 10 cases are Type 2 diabetes which is driven by obesity.

The condition is caused when the body resists the insulin produced in the pancreas and not enough insulin is made. This leads to high levels of sugar in the blood and is associated with multiple health problems including increased risk of heart disease, blindness and amputation.
Dr Adrian Brown, of the UCL’s division of medicine and the lead author, said: “Traditionally, Type 2 diabetes has focused on managing a person’s blood glucose with medication. However, the approach doesn’t address the underlying causes.
“There is now a growing body of research that shows losing significant weight, 10-15kg, either through weight loss surgery or dietary approaches, can bring about Type 2 diabetes remission, essentially non-diabetic blood sugar levels.”
Last year the NHS launched mass pilot schemes putting some 5,000 overweight adults on a “soup and shakes” diet as part of efforts to tackle diabetes. Previous research by the University of Cambridge found most cases of the disease could either be prevented or reversed if BMI was brought low enough.
Dr Duane Mellor, a researcher from Aston University, said: “Accounting for all the evidence, our review suggests remission should be discussed as a primary treatment goal with people living with Type 2 diabetes.
“There are multiple dietary approaches that have been shown to bring about Type 2 Diabetes remission though at present meal replacements offer the best quality evidence.
“Whether or not a person achieves remission, reducing blood sugar levels is important in managing the negative effects of Type 2 diabetes and reducing risk of complications. But when it comes to choosing a diet, the most important thing is to pick one that suits you – one that you’re likely to stick to long term.”
