'Nelson Riddle: A Study of Pop Music's Supreme Orchestrator' Webinar www.eventbrite.com/e/nelson-riddle-a-study-of-pop-musics-supreme-orchestrator-webinar-registration-154240033091 by New York Adventure Club
About this event In a career that lasted from the Golden Age of Big Bands like Tommy Dorsey to the modern era of rock and roll stars like Linda Ronstadt, Nelson Riddle (1921-1985) worked with nearly every major singing star to help them create their biggest hits and most memorable music. But who exactly was this major American maestro, and how did he become the kingpin musical producer of his day? It's time to explore the relatively short, but incredibly prolific career of this remarkable musician who not only arranged classic backgrounds for legendary singers like Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole, but who also wrote the hit songs for classic TV themes and oscar-winning films.
Join New York Adventure Club as we celebrate the life and legacy of Nelson Riddle, the all-time great arranger / orchestrator / conductor / musical director of American popular music.
Led by award-winning author Will Friedwald, who is widely considered one of the nation's most prolific music writers, our musical analysis surrounding Nelson Riddle on what would have been his 100th birthday will include:
The remarkable Nelson Riddle sound — in an age when most casual listeners couldn't tell one arranger from another, Riddle possessed a unique and highly distinct sound that everyone knew An analysis of his unique use of instruments almost never heard in jazz and popular music at the time, such as bass clarinets, oboes, flutes, and bass trombones An overview of Riddle's superstar collaborators: Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, Judy Garland, Keely Smith, Linda Ronstadt, Rosemary Clooney, Steve Lawrence, Peggy Lee, Buddy DeFranco, Jack Jones, Sammy Davis Jr., and many others A discussion of Riddle's own albums and hits, including the chart toppers "Lisbon Antigua" and "Brother John," and his major extended work, "The Cross Country Suite," which combined jazz and classical music into a brilliant and whole original work A look at Nelson's private life, from his marriages, to children, to longtime relationship with star singer Rosemary Clooney A review of the awards that Nelson won throughout his life, including an Oscar for Best Original Score for his music in the iconic 1974 film "The Great Gatsby" Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with Will — any and all questions about Nelson Riddle are welcomed and encouraged!

For Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald, Nelson Riddle was more than an arranger and bandleader. Riddle's orchestra recast their voices and their art - in Cole's case, really, his whole career. A composer as well as an arranger, Riddle knew how to showcase a singer's voice, how to embellish it, and when to leave it alone. The result was classic albums such as Sinatra's Songs for Swingin' Lovers! and Ella Fitzgerald Sings the George and Ira Gershwin Songbook. On the centenary of Nelson Riddle's birth, Phillip Sametz returns to The Music Show to talk about a career that continued well after the 1950s, culminating in his albums with Linda Ronstadt.
Pioneering American slide guitarist and blues singer Ellen McIlwaine had an extraordinary life in music. She performed with Jimi Hendrix and Taj Mahal in the 60s, often shared bills with Tom Waits (because neither of them could be categorised), grew up in Japan and was exposed to a wide variety of music, and found fame in the clubs after being sampled by Fatboy Slim. Ellen McIlwaine died this week at the age of 75 so we'll hear again an interview and live performance she did in 2003.
And we get a sneak peek at the Tasmanian Songbook. Music director Scott Targett tells us about the chart-topping Hobart band The Innocents. The Tasmanian Songbook Project concert is on as part of Tasmania’s Festival of Voices.
