FLASHBACK: GLEN CAMPBELL GOODTIME HOUR, NEIL DIAMOND MEDLEY 1971
Neil Diamond guests on The Glen Campbell TV Show 1971. Neil sings Soolaimon . He then joins Glen and Linda Ronstadt in a medley of his songs.
Can’t Get Any Better Than The Three Of Them On Stage
During the Glen Campbell Comedy Hour, the trio did a medley of some of Neil’s greatest hits including “Holly Holy.” It was a soulful rendition but with an atmosphere of laid back and relaxed vibe. You can just see it in their faces — it was just like friends jammin’ to beautiful songs. Linda, who has earned a total of 11 Grammy Awards, was inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last year.
Ronstadt captured the sounds of country music and the rhythms of ranchera music – which she likened in 1968 to “Mexican bluegrass” – and redirected them into her rock ‘n’ roll and some of her pop music. Many of these rhythms and sounds were part of her Southwestern roots.
Glen Campbell, on the other hand, was a multi-awarded country singer who’s had a series of international hits. For him and Linda to do a medley alongside Neil, it was such a treat for all music fans. Especially with the feel-good tunes, it was a powerhouse performance!

Talk about a classic.
Man, sometimes I wish I could just take a time machine back to the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s, and enjoy all of these TV variety shows that were hosted by country artists.
Seriously, there was The Johnny Cash Show, Hee Haw, The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour, The Porter Wagoner Show, and so many others.
Back in the day, before singing competitions became a thing like American Idol, The Voice, and The X-Factor, up and coming artists used these variety TV show platforms to get their name on the map.
With that being said, we’re gonna spin it back to 1971 to the The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour.
As we know, Glen Campbell was a country music powerhouse back in the day, and his show was beloved by country music fans, and music fans alike. whiskeyriff.com/tag/glen-campbell
At the time, Linda Ronstadt was bursting onto the scene with her first big time hit after parting ways with The Stone Poneys, “Long, Long Time,” and Campbell thought it would be a good idea to bring her onto the show.
The two joined each other on stage, and covered James Taylor’s 1968 release, “Carolina in My Mind.”
Needless to say, the two covered the song to perfection, matching in perfect harmonies, and is just a really cool moment in country music overall.

This video is from a 2007 DVD called "Glen Campbell - Good Times Again." Glen was 71 years old when this DVD was released. It has a number of memorable performances from the TV show "The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour," which ran from 1969 to 1972 on CBS. Four years after this DVD was released, in June of 2011, Glen was diagnosed with Alzheimer's.
The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour was an American network television music and comedy variety show hosted by singer Glen Campbell from January 1969 through June 1972 on CBS. He was offered the show after he hosted a 1968 summer replacement for The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. Campbell used "Gentle on My Mind" as the theme song of the show. The show was one of the few rural-oriented shows to survive CBS's rural purge of 1971.

Christopher Loudon, of Jazz Times, wrote in 2004 that Ronstadt is "blessed with arguably the most sterling set of pipes of her generation."
After completing her last live concert in late 2009, Ronstadt retired in 2011. She was diagnosed as having Parkinson's disease in December 2012, which left her unable to sing.
"Carolina in My Mind" is a song written and performed by singer-songwriter James Taylor, which first appeared on his 1968 self-titled debut album. Taylor wrote it while overseas recording for the Beatles' label Apple Records, and the song's themes reflect his homesickness at the time. Released as a single, the song earned critical praise but not commercial success. It was re-recorded for Taylor's 1976 Greatest Hits album in the version that is most familiar to listeners. It has been a staple of Taylor's concert performances over the decades of his career.
