Chapter 22
It was a strange way to get to LA. Once we had obtained our visas from the US Embassy we were to fly from Heathrow to JFK on Air India then change to Pan Am or TWA from JFK to LA. All employees of Warner Bros were encouraged to use Air India whenever they could due to the film maker having so much money in India from the movie business that they could not repatriate to the USA because of exchange control restrictions in the sub-continent. It was good fun, as usually we were automatically upgraded to Maharaja Class on the Air India part of the journey – Chicken Vindaloo at 35,000 feet was great!
After a 32 hour journey we should have been sleepy, but when we arrived in nighttime LA we were just so excited that it kept us wakeful. Warners had put us into the Continental Hyatt House on Sunset Boulevard with great views across the city. The hotel had been created by Gene Autry and had a swimming pool on the roof.
The next day we picked up a Ford Galaxy soft top to get around the city. The car was great and so too was the music station WABC (?) which was pushing the Linda Ronstadt single “Long, Long Time”. Driving along Sunset, roof down with FM radio playing. We were in heaven! Years later Peter Asher was to produce Linda for Warner Bros. But even when I had seen her perform live in a small club in New York as the “Stone Pony” years earlier she struck me then as a real talent.
