Waving, colorful skirts, ear-to-ear smiles, stomping boots: the sights and sounds of traditional Mexican folklórico dancing are especially vivid as delivered by Los Lupeños de San Jose, one of the first troupes of its kind in California.
Founded in 1969, the group has danced for Pope John Paul II and with Linda Ronstadt, and has a new artistic director, Samuel Cortez.
Twenty dancers strong, with an academy of 100 students, Los Lupeños will give its next performance in San Francisco City Hall for the Rotunda Dance Series, bringing to life dances from the Mexican states of Jalisco and Yucatan.
The popular series is presented by Dancers’ Group and World Arts West. Los Lupeños’ next performance after that will be at San Jose’s Mexican Heritage Plaza on Sept. 26-27.
