The GOP lost its way after Eisenhower through a series of events; southern strategy accepting the racist Dixiecrats into the party, the Libertarian infiltration which was put on steroids by Reagan with their trickle down supply side economics, Iran Contra to steal the 1980 election, oil wars, teaming up with the CIA & transnational corporations to benefit the !% and then came FOX and conservative media who quickly learned that gaslighting the conservative base reaped huge rewards. Conservative media has cultivated a self-perpetuating cult called Conservatism. Now that conservative monster has taken over the party and should NOT be underestimated. They have been very clever at stealing elections typically with pre-election shenanigans (voter roll purging legal voters, gerrymandering, fractional voting, etc.) but this time they may have been outsmarted and they don't like it lol. I wish the Democrats were that organized to pull off what the cons are accusing them of but they aren't.

President Trump's impact on the Republican Party will be studied for decades to come. History will look not only at who joined the GOP in the Trump era, but also who left it. Steve Schmidt is among the latter. For decades a communications strategist working for President George W. Bush and Senator John McCain, Schmidt now denounces the party he once loved. He's a co-founder of The Lincoln Project, a political action committee formed in 2019 by a group of Republicans determined to defeat Trump in the 2020 election. He joins Michel Martin to explain what's next for the project and for the Party -- and to discuss the struggle to preserve American democracy.
