Hoʻoponopono (IPA [ho.ʔo.po.no.po.no]) is a Hawaiian practice of reconciliation and forgiveness. The Hawaiian word translates into English simply as correction, with the synonyms manage or supervise, and the antonym careless. Similar forgiveness practices are performed on islands throughout the South Pacific, including Hawaii, Samoa, Tahiti and New Zealand. Traditional Hoʻoponopono is practiced by Indigenous Hawaiian healers, often within the extended family by a family member. There is also a New Age practice that goes by the same name.

30 or so years ago I studied briefly under Morrnah Simeona and Dr. Hew Len as they often traveled to teach the wonderful concept of Ho'oponopono. I had been reading the Huna teachings of Max Freedom Long at the time so when the opportunity arose I jumped at it.Ho'oponopono: How did Dr. Hew Len and Morrnah Simeona do itThe story behind the lives of Morrnah Simeona and Dr. Hew Len is one of dedication. Morrnah Simeona was born May 19, 1913, in Honolulu, Hawaii. Her mother was a healer and a member of Queen Liliuokalani’s court. By age three, Morrnah has bestowed the responsibility to carry on her mother’s ancient art of healing, known as Ho’oponopono. Len became a dedicated follower of her teachings. He took on the responsibility to keep the teachings alive, long after Simeona’s death.
Ho'oponopono's origins
The practice of Ho’oponopono is used to correct errors of thinking and making the consequences from such thinking right again. It does so by realigning the individual’s life with their Divine nature. For this reason, Ho’oponopono can be compared to the changing of karma.
Traditionally, the practice of Ho’oponopono was used to address group conflict, as within a family. An elder would carry out the healing ritual on the group members. Performing the Ho’oponopono ritual involved following a complex 12-step process as he or she guided each member of the group to the place where they were able to offer forgiveness to the one whom they feel had slighted them.

In 1976, the 63- year-old Morrnah developed her own version of Ho’oponopono in response to the changing of the times. Families and communities, particularly that of westerners, were becoming fragmented, making the traditional approach to Ho’oponopono unpractical. Additionally, she noted how westerners were heavily identified with their intellectual thinking and ego.
Morrnah created an updated version of Ho’oponopono, which she named Self I-Dentity through Ho’oponopono (SITH). SITH was a more user-friendly approach to Ho’oponopono. Individuals could perform it on their own, without the need for a facilitator or other members of the group being present.
A person could perform the practice on themselves and create positive changes both within themselves and in their relationships. As Morrnah once explained, “We can appeal to Divinity who knows our personal blueprint, for the healing of all thoughts and memories that are holding us back at this time…It is a matter of going beyond traditional means of accessing knowledge about ourselves.”

In 1982, Dr. Stanely Hew Len (His birth name was Ihaleakala Hew Len) signed up for one of Morrnah’s trainings. A clinical psychologist, Len was a consultant for the state hospital in Hawaii. Initially, Len was skeptical of Morrnah’s claims regarding SITH’s therapeutic value. Upon meeting her and taking the training, Len was so impressed that he devoted his life to her teachings. He eventually conducted his own trainings, often partnering with Morrnah until her death in 1992.
Len is well known for turning around the Hawaii State Hospital, which contained a unit for the criminally insane. This population showed such dramatic improvements in their behavior that the unit was closed three years later. In commenting on the patients’ transformation, Len said: “[Before], no one could leave the building. A year and a half later, there was none of that. There were people going out on bus rides — nobody in shackles. The level of medication dropped. What did I do? I worked on myself. I took 100% responsibility.”
Len credited the patients’ transformation to his practice of SITH. Len further claimed that he did not do any therapy with these patients, nor did he attend any staff conferences regarding them. “I didn’t heal them. I healed part of myself that created them.”
“Western man has gone to the extremes with his intellectualism; it divides and keeps people separate. Man then becomes a destroyer because he manages and copes, rather than letting the perpetuating force of the Divinity flow through him for right action.”
-Morrnah Simeona
