Mark Mussari 5.0 out of 5 stars Eclectic, eclectic, eclecticReviewed in the United States on October 19, 2000 Verified Purchase
On _A Merry Little Christmas,_ Linda Ronstadt runs the gamut from secular to nonsecular Christmas tunes, stopping to visit classics such as "The Christmas Song" (with a lush, mid-50s arrangement), Joni Mitchell's morose "The River" (with Ronstadt in excellent vocal control, hinting at that slightly sharp tendency in Mitchell's own voice), and "O Come, O Come Emmanuel." On the latter Ronstadt is joined by an angelic choir of (boy?) sopranos; the song is delivered accapella and is nothing short of stunning.
On "I Wonder as I Wander," originally performed a few years ago on an Aaron Neville Christmas special, Ronstadt reveals that she still possesses that high upper register lurking behind her pop offerings. A very aging Rosemary Clooney joins Ronstadt on "White Christmas." Curiously, on "I'll Be Home for Christmas" (with its evocative 40s arrangement) Ronstadt does something she did with "Little Girl Blue" on the _For Sentimental Reasons_ album: she moves the intro verse to the middle and turns it into a bridge (this time sung by a choir); personally I'd rather hear it as an intro verse--it's such a great one!--but it's a fine performance of an old chestnut anyway.
The album is just filled with excellent takes on so many different kinds of yuletide (including a World Music turn) tunes that you'll just have to hear it. The packaging hints at the old-time approach to the pop standards. If there's one thing missing here, it's this: I would have covered an old rock-Christmas song as well (especially "Jingle Bell Rock," which seems perfectly suited to Ronstadt's belting delivery). A keeper!garretjohnston.blogspot.com/2020/12/linda-ronstadt-merry-little-christmas.html

Linda Ronstadt "River"
Joni Mitchell composed "River" for her 1971 album, Blue. Linda Ronstadt recorded the song for her 2000 album, A Merry Little Christmas. RIVERHow a âthoroughly depressingâ Joni Mitchell song became a blue Christmas classicLinda Ronstadt said âRiverâ was an obvious choice when she recorded her own holiday album, âA Merry Little Christmas,â in 2000. âIâd wanted to record it for years, and I just couldnât figure out where to put it,â she told The Post in 2006. âIâd never heard it in the context of other Christmas songs, but I always wondered why that was.â
Ronstadt said at the time that sheâd never discussed the meaning of the song with her old friend, Mitchell.
But she had some ideas about what might have inspired it â possibly including Mitchellâs daughter, who was born in the 1960s, when the singer was 21 and about to move from Saskatoon to Toronto.
Mitchell gave the child up for adoption and didnât have any contact with her until 1997.
âI think thatâs what a lot of her singing is about, because it has this very sad tinge,â Ronstadt speculated. âBut who really knows if thatâs what âRiverâ is about? The answer is: I donât know, and I bet Joni doesnât, either.â For her part, Mitchell told NPR in 2014 that the song is about âtaking personal responsibility for the failure of a relationship.â
âAnd my generation â you know, the âMe Generationâ â is known to be a Peter Pan, narcissistic generation, right?â she said. âSo itâs really, you know â itâs really that aspect of our inability â you know, âIâm selfish and Iâm sad.â Right?
âYou know, people think thatâs confessional, but Iâd say, you know, in my generation, you think that thatâs a unique personal statement? You know what I mean? Itâs like, no wonder thereâs so many covers of it!â
Taylor, who performed âRiverâ in front of Mitchell last month at a tribute concert to celebrate her 75th birthday, said the song is most likely autobiographical, given that âit starts with a girl from Canada watching them try to make Christmas on La Brea in Los Angeles.â
But he told The Post in 2006 that heâd never actually discussed the meaning with Mitchell, with whom he was romantically involved in the early 1970s.
âDo I want to know who she made cry, who she made say goodbye? Well, I havenât asked her that question,â Taylor said. âThatâs the only mystery in it: Who was it whose heart she broke?â
With a laugh, he added: âThere were a lot of us.â

What happened when (Monkees producer and Turtles member) Chip Douglas, Linda Ronstadt, Gram Parsons, Gene Parsons, Howard Kaylan, Henry Diltz, Cyrus Faryar, and (probably) Micky Dolenz' Moog synthesizer got together in '67? This beautiful piece of folk-rock melancholy holiday sound was born.
Unjustly obscure, in a perfect world this is the type of record that would be heard everywhere during the holiday season.
Peace and love to all.

December 24, 1974 was a Christmas Eve for the books. Joni, James Taylor, Carly Simon, Linda Ronstadt, Albert Brooks and many more gathered together at The Troubadour on opening night for Flo and Eddie (Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan of the defunct Turtles). Before the show started these carolers wandered around Hollywood hills startling the neighbors with Christmas carols.

Great Performances: La Pastorela is the best new Christmas special of the year, a boldly unconventional version of a pastorela, or shepherdâs tale, the centuries-old Spanish variation on the Nativity story. Writer-director Luis Valdez (La Bamba, Zoot Suit) has brought the tale up to date by centering it on Gila (Stand and Deliverâs Karla Montana), a poor Mexican girl who has a vision of the angel St. Michael, played in glowing white wings and without a trace of campiness by Linda Ronstadt.Great Performances: La Pastorela âWow! This is totally serious!â says Gila upon seeing St. Michael. âAm I dead?â âYouâve never been more alive,â says the apparition, whereupon Ronstadt bursts into a song, sung in Spanish, telling Gila that she must gather a group of local shepherds and make her way to the Christ Child. Along the way, these pilgrimsâ progress is impeded by the devil (a goggle-eyed but effectively threatening Paul Rodriguez) and abetted by many lovely musical numbers supplied by the band Los Lobos as well as country star Freddy Fender.
The great thing about Valdezâs adaptation is that he doesnât reduce the story to a dewy-eyed parable â the director makes the girlâs journey a frightening, arduous one. Thus when she finally does arrive to celebrate the birth of Baby Jesus, thereâs a sense that she â and we â have really been through a special experience. La Pastorela goes on a bit too long â it could easily be cut to an hour â but it deserves to become an annual TV event. A By Ken Tucker December 20, 1991 at 05:00 AM EST
La Pastorela - A Shepherd's Tale
TV REVIEW : Valdez Puts an American Spin on PBS' 'La Pastorela' OSCAR GARZA TIMES ARTS EDITOR Speaking at an arts conference a few years ago, Luis Valdez was addressing a continuing problem of ethnic labeling. Eschewing Hispanic, Chicano and Latino, Valdez simply pronounced: "I'm an American."
But Valdez wants all his fellow Americans to share in his ethnic heritage, as evidenced by his best-known works: "Zoot Suit" (advertised as "an American play"); the film "La Bamba" (at heart, a story about good ol' American rock 'n' roll) and now "La Pastorela," Valdez's adaptation of a traditional shepherds play (tonight at 8 on KVCR Channel 24, 8:30 on KCET Channel 28, 9 on KPBS Channel 15, and Wednesday at 8 p.m. on KOCE Channel 50).
Pastorelas--stories about shepherds ( pastores ) seeking the newborn Christ child--have been performed in Spain and England since the early days of Christianity. The tradition was brought to Mexico in the 16th Century and remains strong there and in the Southwestern United States.
Writer-director Valdez has taken the story and given it a contemporary, American spin. Starting with a present-day scenario, he creates a play-within-a-play loosely based on "The Wizard of Oz."
In this case, Dorothy is Gila (Karla Montana), a young teen-ager vexed by her status as the oldest of six children in a family of farm workers in the Central California valley. (The film was shot in and around scenic San Juan Bautista.) She's unhappy with the cheap Christmas gifts she has to wrap, unhappier still that her chores kept her from being in the Pastorela at the town mission. (Valdez's El Teatro Campesino has been performing the play for years in the San Juan Mission.)
Gila accompanies her family to the play on Christmas Eve, where they are met at the door by the mission priest (Don Novello in his Father Guido Sarducci guise). When a performer knocks a wooden Bible stand off a raised lectern, Gila leans over to protect her newborn baby brother. The impact knocks her unconscious and, in her dreams, she is transported to the time of Christ's birth, where she is part of a group of pastores that includes her father and other family members and friends. The archangel St. Michael (Linda Ronstadt, in Valdez's bow to non-traditional casting) appears to tell them of the holy birth. And so the pastores go off on their journey, led by Freddy Fender and Flaco Jimenez (one-half of the Tex-Mex band the Texas Tornados), and by a grungy hermit (Leon Singer, in a hilarious performance).
When the pastores finally reach the stable in Bethlehem, they present gifts to the Christ child. As the hermit dances in celebration, his staff hits Gila on the head, bringing her back to the present day, where she awakens from her dream. Just like Dorothy, she regales family and friends with her adventures.
Montana is charming as Gila, as is Anahuac Valdez (Luis' oldest son) as Bato, the young pastor with whom Gila falls in love, and who reappears as the actor who helped her after the accident in the mission.
In casting the film, Valdez in many instances opted for recognizable celebrities over trained actors, but he gets away with it. One of the few transgressions is Ronstadt belting out the angels' song as if she were singing a ranchera from her recordings of traditional Mexican music. But even that may have been intentional in Valdez's irreverent and wholly American take on this holy story. www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1991-12-23-ca-658-story.html

HAVE YOURSELF A MERRY LITTLE CHRISTMAS
A Merry Little Christmas is a Christmas album and song by American singer/songwriter/producer Linda Ronstadt, released in 2000. It was the final release under Ronstadt's recording contract with the Elektra/Asylum Records label for whom Linda had recorded since 1973 (twenty-seven years to that point). John Boylan returned to the scene as Linda's producer - and manager - for this disc. Boylan remains Linda's official representative as of 2019.
It was the biggest-selling Holiday album of the 2000 Christmas season. It peaked at #179 on Billboard's main album chart and continued to sell year in and year out.

MR: Letâs talk about a couple of the duets, âSisters,â first of all, with Bette Midler.
LR: I loved doing that. We had so much fun. I love Bette Midler, Iâm a huge Bette Midler fan. I think she is just an incredibly brilliant, wonderful, intelligent talent and sheâs so creative and sheâs such a wonderful writer and she just does it all herself, you know? Itâs hard to find a talent like that where sheâs just making it all up herself. She knows when to delegate and add stuff, she invents all of these characters, I love her.
MR: Yeah, and you not only sound like sisters, you sound like twins on that one.
LR: [laughs] Oh, weâre both chameleons, so weâre both kind of reflecting each other. But she has a little delighted, delicious⌠Itâs her sense of humor that comes out in the middle of that song; itâs the little gleam in her eyes, that wicked little sense of humor. Sheâs just absolutely naughty. When she sings, she has that undercurrent of a stripperâs âbuh-boom, buh-boom, buh-boomâ kind of thing. [laughs] The two sisters in business selling it out there, itâs so great. Itâs such a conspiratorial little thing she was sharing with me.
bootlegbetty.com/2014/04/07/linda-ronstadt-on-singing-with-bette-midler/I thought it was interesting that Rosemary Clooney starred in the movie White Christmas (named after a song from the film Holiday Inn); Bette Midler and Linda Ronstadt recorded the Clooney song Sisters from the same movie AND Linda included the song White Christmas featuring Rosemary Clooney on her Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas Christmas album. And on a personal note one of my sisters was named after Clooney's sister (co-star in the movie) Vera Ellen. So many coincidences in this small world. If you haven't heard Bette's album of Rosie's songs you need to. Excellent album that I believe she said was recorded in just a few days. Memories Of You is compelling and her Barry Manilow duet is fun. Sisters (song)From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"Sisters" is a popular song written by Irving Berlin in 1954, best known from the 1954 movie White Christmas.
Recordings White Christmas Both parts were sung by Rosemary Clooney (who served as Vera-Ellen's singing vocal dub for this song, while Trudy Stevens dubbed Vera-Ellen's other songs in the film).
The movie White Christmas also starred Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye. It was not possible to issue an "original soundtrack album" of the film, because Decca Records controlled the soundtrack rights, but Clooney was under exclusive contract with Columbia Records. Consequently, each one issued a separate "soundtrack recording": Decca issuing Selections from Irving Berlin's White Christmas, while Columbia issued Irving Berlin's White Christmas. On the former, the song "Sisters" (as well as all of Clooney's vocal parts) was recorded by Peggy Lee, while on the latter, the song was sung by Rosemary Clooney and her own sister, Betty. The Clooney sisters' version, which was also released as a single, was the most popular recording of the song, charting in 1954.
Cover versions The song was also made famous in the United Kingdom by sister act the Beverley Sisters.
A 2004 album of songs made famous by Rosemary Clooney, done by Bette Midler, included a version of the song done by Linda Ronstadt and Midler.

WINTER LIGHT ~ LINDA RONSTADT (engl. lyrics)
Hearts call, hearts fall swallowed in the rain.
Who knows, life grows hollow and so vain.
Wandering in the winter light, the wicked and the sane. Bear witness to salvation and life starts over again.
Now the clear sky is all around you Aah aah Love's shadow will surround you All through the night
Star glowing in the twilight, tell me true. Hope whispers and I will follow till you love me too.
