Linda Ronstadt is selling a collection of personal memorabilia at auction in August, including the piano in her San Francisco living room that was once owned by Peter Asher, the pop star-turned-Grammy-winning producer and manager.

Among the items the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame singer will offer through Heritage Auctions of Dallas on Aug. 8-9 is the original photo by Ethan Russell that graced the cover of her 1976 release, “Hasten Down the Wind,” a medallion presented to her at the 1985 Grammy Awards, and several other honors.

Ronstadt, 74, is parting with the prized Yamaha Grand piano, which has been played by Elton John, Ray Charles, Joni Mitchell and Carole King, to clear space in her home in the city’s Sea Cliff neighborhood.

“A lot of history sat at that piano,” Ronstadt, who stopped performing after she was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2009, said in a statement to The Chronicle. “I know because I lived every minute of it.”
The opening bid on the piano is $3,200.

Before the singer brought it to San Francisco some 15 years ago, it served as the centerpiece of Asher’s West Hollywood office just off Sunset Boulevard.
“I can remember James Taylor rehearsing the songs from ‘JT.’ Smokey Robinson. Joni Mitchell was a client for a while. Carole King played that piano — she was always around,” Ronstadt recalled. “Just an unending stream of musicians.”
Asher became Ronstadt’s manager in 1973 and produced her back-to-back hit albums “Don’t Cry Now” and 1974’s “Heart Like a Wheel.” He said the piano played a key role in the development of many familiar songs over the years.
“I was always glad it went to Linda,” Asher said in a statement. “I thought of it as remaining in the family. It’s a piano for an era, for sure.”
Other items available as part of the Heritage Auctions arts and entertainment event include an original poster for the Family Dog’s “A Tribal Stomp” Jefferson Airplane concert at the Fillmore from 1966; the Grateful Dead’s “Skeleton and Roses” bill from the same year at the Avalon Ballroom; and a print from the “Pow-Wow: A Gathering of the Tribes” Human Be-In event at Golden Gate Park in 1967.
