Not tired enough to stop, no- but yes, it’s tiring as hell. It’s not a voluntary thing, this business of being constantly keyed in for danger. That’s one of the factors that makes conservatives conservative. Asking this is a bit like asking you if you ever get tired of constantly breathing. It becomes a thing you don’t pay attention to, the sort of experience you have no idea other people don’t have.
I’m a conservative in this way, even though I left the GOP tribe long ago. I’m pretty constantly angry when I see:
People calling themselves ‘conservative’ playing on conservative fears to stand up a neo-authoritarian state in the world’s sole remaining superpower. [What Is the Far Right’s Endgame? A Society That Suppresses the Majority.]
These people have targeted good people (like my family and friends) and convinced them we’ll all be better off stripping ourselves of our rights and protections, for the greater glory of …Trumpism. God damn that makes me furious.
That with the current packing of the courts, the current control the GOP has over voting systems, their proclivity for voter suppression and vote-rigging, that democracy as we know it in the United States may already be lost for the foreseeable future.
When the election results come back rigged… the remedy is in the courts? To a justice system controlled by… who?
That the people who obligingly didn’t raise a fuss when they saw minority votes being suppressed couldn’t seem to fathom that if it can be taken from them, it can be taken from anyone else in exactly the same way.
The same shit that has been happening to brown and black people for a century in this country can happen to you.
That when the vote can be controlled and rigged, no rights will be held sacred- they will instead be favors granted (or withheld) by a state with only its own interests in mind. You won’t be special. You will be free to do as the regime dictates.
That with a global resurgence of what can only be described as Russia-inspired fascism gaining traction in governments around the world, it’s not infeasible to speculate that in a world of <my-country> first nations, World War III probably isn’t all that far off.
I grew up in a time where the middle class was stable, when Social Security, Medicare, the New Deal were all agreed to be the fundament of the American middle class, that the big doomsday hanging over all of our heads was the Russians and their nukes. But the USSR collapsed, the GOP have sold their souls to their check-writing masters, and climbed into bed with their other various sugar-daddies, and the Democratic base can’t be bothered to vote to defend basic stuff like democracy or social security or labor rights or a clean environment.
The change-averse conservative in me howls in frustration every time I see this shit happening. Yeah, I’m tired as hell of being angry and afraid. But it’s always there, always present the moment I realize again that we keep on electing enablers whose only critique of the 3rd Reich is that it lost.
