How a Tucson radio station will honor Linda Ronstadt on the Arizona native's 75th birthdaywww.azcentral.com/story/entertainment/music/2021/07/14/tucson-arizona-radio-linda-ronstadt-75th-birthday/7958067002/ Ed Masley Arizona Republic
KXCI-FM (91.3), a community radio station in Tucson, is celebrating Linda Ronstadt's 75th birthday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 15.
KXCI DJs will share music in celebration of the Tucson native's legacy in a career that as the station says, found her "carrying with her some of the signature culture and character of Sonora, Mexico and Southern Arizona to the farthest reaches of the world."
You don't have to be in Tucson to stream the station's celebration at KXCI.org. kxci.org/
The Tucson native was among the most successful artists of her generation, selling out "stupid" arenas, as she called them in a recent interview with The Republic, thanks to hits as huge as "When Will I Be Loved" and "Blue Bayou." www.azcentral.com/story/entertainment/music/2018/03/09/linda-ronstadt-music-simple-dreams-memoir/408779002/
How Ronstadt's music crosses many genres
Having launched her career in 1967 with the breakthrough single "Different Drum," a baroque ballad credited to the Stone Poneys featuring Linda Ronstadt, she managed a career-defining run of 10 Top 20 singles from 1975's "You're No Good" to 1980's "Hurt So Bad."
"Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice" looks at the vocalist's long career.
From there, she branched out into almost every area of music, from her starring role in "Pirates Of Penzance" on Broadway to her multiplatinum renditions of the Great American Songbook with Nelson Riddle, interpreting the mariachi classics in "Canciones de mi Padre" and teaming with Emmylou Harris and Dolly Parton on country albums.
After earning a Tony nomination in 1981 for her role in "The Pirates of Penzance," she moved on from the country, pop and rock sound of her hit years, recording a trilogy of albums celebrating the Great American Songbook with conductor Nelson Riddle.
These were followed by "Trio," a 1986 collaboration with Dolly Parton and Emmylou Harris, and 1987's "Canciones De Mi Padre," the singer's first album of traditional Mexican mariachi music.
In an interview with The Republic in 2018, Ronstadt said, "In the ‘90s, I did my best singing. That was when I could sort of do whatever I wanted to do. I could make my voice do it."
She's won lifetime achievement awards from both the Grammys and the Latin Grammys. And although she prefers singing standards and Mexican folk songs to the rock 'n' roll on which she rose to fame in the '70s, Ronstadt took her rightful place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014.
What Ronstadt is doing now
By the time of that induction, Ronstadt had retired.
Unable to perform to her own standards, the singer gave her last performance, a Mexican show, in 2009, and retired two years later, finally learning the cause behind the loss of her ability to sing in late 2012 when she was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease.
She did, however, tour with a highly-acclaimed one-woman show, A Conversation with Linda Ronstadt, from 2014 to 2018.
"Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice," a heartfelt documentary, won Best Music Film at the Grammy Awards in March. www.azcentral.com/story/entertainment/music/2019/09/11/linda-ronstadt-sound-my-voice-bittersweet-fan-letter/2278267001/
The previous October, she received the Hispanic Heritage Foundation's Legend Award on PBS. www.azcentral.com/story/entertainment/music/2020/09/21/linda-ronstadt-receive-hispanic-heritage-foundations-legend-award/5853860002/

Linda Rondstadt.com Linda Ronstadt is from Tucson.
July 15 is the birthday of one of Arizona’s greatest music icons — not a Gin Blossom or named Alice. Tucson native Linda Ronstadt celebrates her 75th birthday today.
Her amalgam of folk music, rock 'n' roll energy and blues infusion allowed her to break into the mid-'60s California rock 'n' roll scene.
The Ronstadt name had been well-known in Tucson for generations; the family played a key role in public service and business in the region, but the Ronstadts were also a musical family, as Linda described to Diane Rehm in 2014: wamu.org/story/14/07/29/singer-linda-ronstadt-her-life-music/
“My grandmother and grandfather loved opera and classical music, and my grandfather had been — in the 19th century — was the conductor of a military band, kind of an oompah brass band — and he wrote compositions and arrangements for that band ... conducted it, taught everyone there — he was like the Music Man, except he was the real deal, he could really play. My grandmother loved opera, and she’d listen to the Saturday afternoon broadcast from the Met — every Saturday, we'd go over there and sing along with it. Everybody knew the arias. You knew all the major arias and played them and sang them on the piano — not to the point where you could go stand on stage at the Met, but so that you could sing it for yourself in your privacy of your sorrow or your joy or whatever you wanted to express.”
Ronstadt’s career exploded throughout the 1970s and '80s as she charted legacy singles like "You’re No Good," "Hurts So Bad" and 1977’s “"Blue Bayou."
By the late '70s, Ronstadt was the highest-paid woman in rock 'n' roll and her career shifted gears to the Broadway stage when she starred in 1980's "The Pirates of Penzance."
In 1987, she once again redefined herself with a tribute to her Mexican heritage — an album of Mexican folk songs that to this day stands as one of the biggest selling non-English language albums in American record history.
Linda Ronstadt left California in 1997 to return to her roots in Tucson, staying through 2014 when she left for San Francisco, saying the political climate in Arizona did not suit her.
In 2013, Ronstadt announced she had Parkinson's disease that had been affecting her singing for years before it was diagnosed. Two months after that diagnosis, she spoke with Fresh Air's Terri Gross about it: www.npr.org/2013/09/17/223172521/in-memoir-linda-ronstadt-describes-her-simple-dreams
"For years I was struggling on stage. I was having such a hard time singing because I didn’t have any muscle control. And you have exquisite muscle control when you're singing — there are just a lot of things that have to be coordinated on an exquisite level — so I just couldn’t do it, and I didn’t know why. I knew how to sing all my whole life. So it was a relief to know, but I would have rather it be measles or something I was going to get over. But that’s the breaks.”
While her performances are much missed, the legacy she leaves behind is extensive, including 30 albums, 14 Grammy Awards, induction into the Arizona Music & Entertainment Hall of Fame, and being a 2019 Kennedy Center Honoree.
Jim Nintzel is the executive editor of the Tucson Weekly, and he described Ronstadt’s lasting impact on the music industry:
"She’s called the 'Queen of Rock 'n' Roll.' She was the first huge female rock 'n' roll star and she paved the way for a lot of women to move forward in what is the boys' world of rock 'n' roll."

KXCI’s next day of featured programming is this Friday, July 15th on Linda Ronstadt’s birthday. It will be a day of music and words focusing on the recordings, heritage, and legacy of Tucson’s most famous musical daughter, but will encompass much more than a single artist. KXCI started Linda Ronstadt Day in 2019 as an annual radio celebration to honor the musical spirit of the Sonoran desert we call home.
Linda Ronstadt exemplifies the rich heritage and mixing of cultures that our region represents. The roots and branches of Linda Ronstadt’s creative spirit spotlighted Mariachi, folk, jazz, western and Latin music. Her influence not only elevates cultural heritages but continues to inspire rock, pop, country, and contemporary music while uplifting female voices.
There are many musical lines that can be drawn, from Lalo Guererro the father of Chicano music who serenaded Linda as a child, to her backing band becoming The Eagles, to a younger generation represented by Arizona-raised Courtney Marie Andrews, and the youth of Mariachi Aztlán de Pueblo High School who performed during the renaming ceremony of the Tucson Music Hall in her honor.
Linda Ronstadt Day is a multicultural embrace with a strong focus on the feminine creative spirit. This is a legacy we can stand behind and call our own. Join hosts Pepe Galvez, DJ El Toro, Bridgitte Thum, and Hannah Levin with the voices of Linda Ronstadt, Tucson Mayor Regina Romero and more on Friday from 7 am to 6 pm, here only on KXCI Community Radio.
Dan Buckley documented the May 6, 2022 dedication of the Tucson Convention Center Linda Ronstadt Music Hall. You can read more about it and watch a full video of the proceedings here. Tucson Mayor Regina Romero has said that she got the idea while speaking with Linda Ronstadt during a KXCI interview in 2021.
