Linda Ronstadt - The National Anthem
This was Fall 1977. Linda’s album Simple Dreams was a number one album for 4 consecutive weeks in the summer of ‘77. This was her zenith of super stardom when she sang the national anthem.

The Dodgers voted on who they wanted to sing this, and they voted for Linda. The Dodgers contacted her management, they talked to her, she said OK (if they gave her a jacket?) She got her manager, Peter Asher to help her work it up. After they figured it out, he laughed and said "this song is impossible to sing well. There's not enough money in the world to get me to do it in public, and you agreed to do it for free!" Bonus- she absolutely nailed it!

Absolutely one of the best renditions of our National Anthem ever. FABULOUS !!! We love you Linda! Our National Treasure. ( and yes Kieth Jackson: Linda was the proud Dodger fanatic...the Dodger jacket was her only (requested) fee for singing the anthem! And the Dodgers gladly went out and got her one. What a gal !!! )

You can hear how the crowd goes quiet, as people realize the she is REALLY singing the anthem. And then the newscasters at the end, happy and a little bit blown away. One of them calls her a Hall of Famer.

That was Tom Seaver who rightly called her a Hall of Famer. With Keith Jackson who called her out for her obvious allegiance to the Dodgers lol
Just straightforward no-nonsense perfect singing. After the last 30-40 years of singers trying to melisma us to death, how refreshing. Ronstadt's voice had no limits. Remember Houston's was not sung live (she couldn't have done it live). This performance is remarkable.
