Thirty years ago, as the AIDS crisis exploded in San Francisco and across the nation, big-name rock stars — including Jerry Garcia, Huey Lewis, John Fogerty, Tracy Chapman, Linda Ronstadt and more — put on a week of Bay Area shows to raise money to fight the disease.
“I’ve lost some friends to AIDS. This is an emotional issue for me,” Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia said at a news conference announcing In Concert Against AIDS.
“We are not really making any sacrifices. We’re doing what we always do, playing music for people,” Garcia said. “I hope this gets treated with the seriousness it deserves. It’s still being treated like some kind of political issue, not like what it really is, a health issue.”

The Chronicle sent photographers, including future Pulitzer Prize winner Deanne Fitzmaurice, to some of the shows in May 1989. A search in the newspaper’s archive turned up lots of concert shots from these special gigs — almost all previously unpublished.
A giant AIDS benefit concert was the idea of Zohn Artman, an associate of Bay Area rock promoter Bill Graham who was “equally at home babysitting Mick Jagger during a whirlwind visit or spending the afternoon swimming with Louise Davies,” Chronicle music critic Joel Selvin wrote. Artman’s business cards at Bill Graham Presents listed his title as Wizard.
Artman wanted to “see heterosexual rock stars stand up and be counted in the battle against AIDS” and had envisioned a stadium concert and telethon three years earlier for a San Jose benefit that never worked out. But Artman wouldn’t see his dream come true — he had died in October 1987 from AIDS at age 51.
The week of events, including “the world’s longest conga line,” a comedy night and a gospel choir show, culminated in a nine-hour rock concert at the Oakland Coliseum with the Dead, Fogerty, Chapman, Los Lobos and others.
The week kicked off with Huey Lewis and the News headlining the more intimate setting of Slim’s over three nights, with tickets going for $125 with dinner.
“Digging heavily into a rock ’n’ roll and soul oldies bag,” Selvin wrote, Huey and Company delighted the crowd of just over 300 with classics like “Shake, Rattle and Roll” and their own hits.
“The band sounded refreshed and happy, obviously relishing the opportunity to play a small club after years of appearance before far larger crowds.”

In Concert Against AIDS" at Oakland Stadium, CA May 27, 1989
Dreams We Dreamed
1,979 views Jul 28, 2023 During the the last ten days of May 1989, the San Francisco Bay Area joined together for an unprecedented series of musical and entertainment events. "In Concert Against AIDS" provided a forum to raise awareness, provide AIDS education, and raise money for the care and support of AIDS patients. The Oakland Stadium concert featured the Dead, Los Lobos, Tracy Chapman, and Joe Satriani. A major highlight was the guest appearance of John Fogerty backed by Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Randy Jackson, and Steve Jordon. Except for one benefit for Vietnam Veterans on July 4, 1987, this was the first time Fogerty had played any Creedence Clearwater Revival songs for a large audience since 1972. DTV digs into the background of this historic Bay Area event.

19,803 views Premiered Sep 22, 2021 Thanks to LeeJ for providing a first gen transfer of this show with some really good quality. As with all videos, this will look and sound better AFTER premiere mode has ended. I had some errors in the process of getting this to where i wanted it, so this will be done over again in the near future (hence the preview tag in the title)
Based on the provided tape, I do expect a pretty decent jump in quality from this to the next time I publish it (and will contain the entire segment, not just part 1)
I will also go over the audio. the levels seemed low when i was spot-checking. This tape is in wonderful shape compared to the other sources I've seen, so it should look pretty good either way
