A recent appeals court decision out of New York may be what pushes Democrats to win the House in 2024.
The appeals court ordered the Independent Redistricting Commission to redraw the state's congressional map.
The congressional map used in 2022 led four Republicans to flip previously Democratic-held seats.
A New York appeals court just ordered its congressional map to be redrawn, a move that could help Democrats take back control of the US House of Representatives in 2024.
According to the New York Times, the Appellate Division of the State Supreme Court in Albany declared the congressional map that was used in 2022 — which led to Republicans, including Rep. George Santos, flipping four previously Democratic seats — was never supposed to be the map used long-term.
If this decision stands — the Times reported the GOP plans to appeal it to the Court of Appeals — it's a massive boost for the Democratic Party, who currently have ten fewer seats in the House than Republicans.
The ruling would also act as a counter to North Carolina, whose GOP-majority state supreme court is allowing the Republican-led general assembly to redraw its congressional map in a favorable way for the Republican Party.
The ruling in New York was praised in a statement by Rep. Suzan DelBene, the chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.
"After last year's Republican power grab resulted in an out-of-state special master drawing a map that was rubber stamped by a partisan judge, today's decision by the New York Court is a reaffirmation that the will of the voters should be respected when it comes to drawing fair maps," DelBene said.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries echoed DelBene, attacking the judge who appointed the special master to draw up the current congressional map of New York.
"The Appellate Division decision confirms that the New York State Constitution requires congressional district lines be drawn by an independent redistricting commission. In contrast, the current congressional map was drawn by an unelected, out-of-town Special Master appointed by an extreme right-wing judge, who himself was handpicked by partisan political operatives," Jeffries said.
