Following the announcement the former President Donald Trump was being federally indicted on 37 counts, Trump and his supporters fell back on familiar narratives and "whataboutisms." But there was also a subtle shift. Trump amped up talk of an impending World War 3 and nuclear obliteration, which only he'd be able to prevent. Some Republican politicians, like Louisiana Representative Clay Higgins, used militia speak to rally Trump's supporters and prepare for violence. Jeff Sharlet, author of The Undertow: Scenes from a Slow Civil War, argues that these narratives of martyrdom, a persecuted in-group, a mysterious out-group, and a rhetoric of violence are all hallmarks of fascism. Brooke speaks with Sharlet about what the rhetoric, aesthetics, and myth-making of Trump and the movement he rode to power can tell us about a rising fascist movement in the United States, and why Sharlet argues we're in the midst of a slow civil war.
