Mucus/Phlegm can cause some serious coughing spells. That in turn can create among other things a HIATAL HERNIA that causes a condition called GERD. And if you already have that hernia it could exacerbate to the extreme causing chest pains, burning, acid reflux, weakness, burning of the esophagus which all left unchecked could cause critical conditions.

Although most people with a hiatal hernia do not experience any symptoms, others may suffer from recurrent symptomatic reflux requiring medication or even surgery. Reflux more readily occurs because the esophageal length is now shorter and the sphincter between the stomach and esophagus is often unusually loose.
