This virtual mariachi celebration is connecting professional artists with community members and bridging the gap between generations by allowing well-known local mariachi ensembles such as Las Colibrí, Mariachi Divas de Cindy Shea, and Mariachi Espectacular to share the virtual stage with local school-based mariachi programs from Chapman University, Santa Ana High School and Garey High School.
In a live Q&A, ensemble leaders will join together to explore topics such as women in mariachi, local mariachi culture, and the transfer of knowledge to the next generation of musicians. In partnership with Chapman’s Latinx Staff and Faculty Forum, other family activities, such as story time and arts and crafts demos, will be provided.
About Las Colibrí
Las Colibrí or “The Hummingbirds,” are an all-female mariachi ensemble playing traditional early 20th century all-string instrumentations in the colorful costumes of Mexican cinematic divas of the 40’s and 50’s. With a traditional lineup featuring Guitarrón, Guitar, Vihuela, and Violins, they perform unique interpretations of traditional sones, huapangos, and rancheras with more modern jazz, rock, oldies, and R&B influences.
