The ACA expanded Medicaid and provided subsidies to people that weren’t below the poverty level but certainly could not afford health insurance. It also set up the structure to offer individual insurance to the self-employed market.
Unfortunately the cost of insurance is going up regardless of the ACA. Historically we’ve seen double digit inflation of insurance over the past 20 years.
Many of the health plans that were on the market previous were severely flawed. They excluded pre-existing conditions; charged more for women than for men; and had lifestime and yearly caps that often sent people to bankruptcy court when their insurance was revoked.
And lastly, everyone’s insurance premium is set based on actuarial assumptions based on where you live. And if you live in an area where there isn’t competition and/or the pool of people are sicker (Southern State as an example) then your costs are going to be higher.
The ACA made great strides in taking away penalties, normalizing pricing, and improving access BUT it isn’t perfect. There are known elements that need to be fixed including your situation. I believe Democrats are willing and eager to come to the table - but the GOP just wants to scrap the whole thing.
