The Topanga Story: Order Your Copy Now!April 19, 2012 - By Michele Johnson After 10 years of effort, the Topanga Historical Society (THS) announces the long-anticipated arrival of the expanded second edition of The Topanga Story in May, 2012.

After 10 years of effort, the Topanga Historical Society (THS) announces the long-anticipated arrival of the expanded second edition of The Topanga Story in May.
THS members get first crack at reserving a copy of the book, a 400-page beauty featuring dozens of new photos and articles contributed to by several residents. The book was edited by Michele Johnson and designed by award-winning graphic artist Amy Inouye.
Non-members can become THS members for $15, single, or $25, family, a year, which gives them the privilege of pre-ordering the book.
The first edition, edited by Louise Armstrong York, was a gem of a book, so popular among Topanga history buffs that it sold out. In 2002, rather than just reprint the original, the THS decided it was time for an update.
Since York was sidelined by illness, Michele Johnson, an experienced writer and former Topanga Messenger editor, was asked to tackle the project. The long-time Topangan discovered a wealth of new material had been donated to the THS library organized by Ami Kirby, who became photo editor of the expanded edition. The update quickly became a major expansion.
Every chapter has been revised. Respected scientists added new information to the early chapters focusing on the natural canyon and Topanga’s early inhabitants. Articles such as “The Early Rock Scene” about Canyon geology and “Studying our Critters,” written in the unique voice of Topanga biologist Rosi Dagit, add immeasurably to those subjects. Gorgeous new photos punctuate the text with David Blattel’s iconic “Grandmother Oak,” Herbert Petermann’s photo of lupine growing in Summit Valley and Katie Dalsemer’s shot of Cheese Rock in Old Topanga.
It was hard to improve upon Louise’s lively and well-researched stories of Topanga’s early pioneers. But new information on rare and gritty women homesteaders was uncovered and the colorful life of early denizens of Lower Canyon, remembered with affection and fun by a little lady who grew up there, add punch to the new edition as do the additional historic photos.
The later history of the Canyon was widely expanded and features photos from the pages of the Topanga Messenger. “Post-War Pioneers” who moved here after World War II, like Harriet Swenson, tell their colorful, first-hand stories.
Johnson puts a spotlight on the bohemians of the fifties, including those who hung at the Theatricum, attempting to escape the horrors of McCarthyism. After the Beatnik era, Topanga became a hippie haven, sheltering artists, rockers and, for a time, the notorious Charles Manson.

“The Arts” chapter of Topanga Story doubled in size, fattened by an amazing wealth of material on famous artists and musicians such as Neil Young (above) and Linda Ronstadt.
the 70s, Topanga remained a latter-day hippie oasis. Pulitzer-winning Al Martinez, whose letters are now being celebrated at the Huntington Library, wrote an LA Times piece in 1975, detailing the life of the Canyon with his accustomed wit and heart. It is reprinted in The Topanga Story, as is an excerpt from celebrated Topanga novelist Carolyn See’s “Golden Days,” a novel not so loosely based in the Topanga of the time.
An all-new chapter, “After 1980: Into the New Millennium,” brings us up to date, exploring the activism that saved Summit Valley and brought us T-CEP, and the forces of change that offer Topanga both threat and opportunity.
Expanding within York’s blueprint, there are new calamities detailed in the “Disasters” chapter, especially the fire of 1993 and earthquake of 1994.

Linda Ronstadt, Topanga..
from Linda Ronstadt and Neil Young to Wallace Berman and Woody Guthrie — who made Topanga their home. The anecdotes in that chapter are part of the reason that Johnson considers the history of Topanga “endlessly interesting.”

Val, did Lance make stops along the Old Topanga Canyon Road at people's homes? This photo looks like it might be outside of Linda's house off the road. Amazing how her shawl matches the wagon's decor. Possibly she bought it from Lance. After speaking to some of my old Topanga crew who are still around, I managed to put a date to this photo. Someone else has personal photos taken this day of the wagon and of Linda. The date is August 1971. This was on a Saturday when the craft fair took place at the Center.
ronstadtfanaz said: That was the month I left home for the first time to go to college. 8 months later I met Linda on campus. Brings back memories. Thanks Val.This photo is by Ed Caraeff in Topanga Canyon August 22, 1971. He took many beautiful photos of her. amen to that. I know she was friends with Henry Diltz but I wonder how well she knew Ed? He did take some iconic photos of Linda. At least up until she was into her Trio period, the first aborted attempt.

Arizona-born and bred Linda Ronstadt went on to live the California dream — but she admitted she came within feet of a deep, dark nightmare. During a chat with Mojo magazine, the legendary singer revealed that she has an ugly connection to Charles Manson and his infamous Family, explaining, “They murdered my next door neighbor, Gary Hinman. We knew those girls. They used to hitchhike through the canyon all the time. After (the murder), I didn't go home for a couple of weeks. Eventually, I moved out. Topanga Canyon had a very dark undertone. A funky, dark place, with a lot of those communes; I always shied away from that stuff. And there were floods all the time. I moved to Beechwood Canyon, which was very handy for the Troubadour.”

The Doors- 'Roadhouse Blues' Morrison Hotel
Airbaja 18.6K subscribers If there was an actual roadhouse that inspired this song, it was probably the Topanga Corral, a windowless nightclub in the counterculture enclave of the Topanga Canyon, where Jim Morrison lived.
To get to the venue you had to take Topanga Canyon Boulevard, which is full of twists and turns - you really did need to "keep your eyes on the road, your hand upon the wheel."
The Corral, where Little Feat and Canned Heat played and Linda Ronstadt was often spotted in the audience, burned down in 1986.
There was a cabin behind the Topanga Corral that many sources say Morrison bought for his girlfriend, Pamela Courson. This could be what provided the line, "In back of the Roadhouse they got some bungalows." Guitar great Lonnie Mack played bass. The Doors usually did not use a bass player as you know..
Doors guitarist Robby Krieger joined Creed on stage at Woodstock '99, where they performed this. It is on the Woodstock '99 CD.This an editorial review.

LINDA RONSTADT RECALLS DODGING MANSON GIRLS & RECORDING WITH NEIL YOUNG nightswithalicecooper.com/2020/05/20/linda-ronstadt-recalls-dodging-manson-girls-recording-with-neil-young/ May 20, 2020 | 6:00 AM
In addition to her own string of '70s classics, Linda Ronstadt also sang backup on her friend Neil Young's 1972 Harvest album — including the era-defining tracks “Old Man” and the chart-topping “Heart Of Gold.” Ronstadt was asked what she remembers about the sessions, which also included James Taylor: “I can't remember why Neil wanted me to sing with him — I guess he just figured I was there and could do it — but we went in there and they were doing 'Heart Of Gold' and 'Old Man' and I thought they were such beautiful songs. I loved them. And I knew how to do harmonies — I'd listened to Buffalo Springfield harmonies and I knew how to get that 7th they always used. I don't think we started until midnight and it was dawn when we came out, and it was snowing. We came out to this beautiful snowstorm in the rising sun. It was really exciting. I just thought I had been part of something really wonderful.”
Linda Ronstadt has admittedly shared a microphone with the best in the business — and she says that all our secrets and personal information are audible by the sound of our voices: “I can hear their life, I can hear the state of their health, I can hear, y'know, whether they feel good about singin' that note — I mean, you can hear so much. I don't always listen with that intensity — I can hear lying, y'know? I think people in law enforcement get really good, they have a talent for it to start with. My brother was, is a good singer, but he was the chief of police in Tucson for years and you do not ever want to tell him a lie, because he's gonna know (laughs) in one word. He's gonna know halfway through the sentence, you're lying. So, you can hear that kind of stuff in a voice. I don't think we have very well trained ears in a lot of ways.”

Gerry Lavelle 4 hours ago Back in 1979 I moved from Colorado Southern California and rented a house on Old Topanga Road. On Halloween Eve I was reading 'Helter Skelter." When I got to the chapter about Gary Hinman I read that his address was on Old Topanga Road. I walked down the outdoor steps to the road and looked at the mailboxes. Wow. The mailbox next to mine was Gary Hinman's. It sure made for a spooky Halloween night thinking about what had gone on next door 10 years earlier. I wondered if Gary's ghost still haunted the place. I felt a connection to him because I was from Colorado and I used to make mescaline back in the day. Spooky shit.
robtempe 3 months ago Guess who lived next door at the time in 954 Old Topanga Canyon Rd.? ans. Linda Ronstadt. Linda said she wasn't home at the time or they might have come after her. Around the time Gary Hinman met his bitter end Linda happened to be playing a gig in NYC called The Bitter End. Woodstock was also happening around that time. What a year! Linda later moved into a Brentwood CA neighborhood near Nicole Brown Simpson where they often ran into each other while walking their dogs.
Creepy Crawl with Sobaire 3 months ago WOW! Thank you for that information. That is wild!
Gerry Lavelle 3 hours ago I rented that house in 1979. I didn't know Linda Ronstadt lived there years earlier. The landlord was a creepy dude. The house caught on fire because of his crappy installation of a pot bellied stove. He tried to blame me but I had called the Topanga Canyon fire chief over to inspect the cause of the fire after I put it out. The fire chief noted the stove pipe went through the wood ceiling without insulation and told me to call him if the landord tried to blame me. Sure enough the guy tried to blame me. I called the fire chief and he came over read the guy the riot act. The landlord ended up evicting me and my girlfriend and he kept our deposit -- but at least I didn't have to pay for major repairs.
robtempe 2 minutes ago (edited) @gerry Lavelle great story Gerry. Have you seen the remodeled version of the house on zillow lately? Looks like it was totally redone, probably because of the fire or a new owner took it over. How close was Linda's house to the Hinman house next door? Just found your other comment further down. Spooky indeed!
Gerry Lavelle 2 hours ago @robtempe I could see the house from my house. Whoever owned the house next door when I lived there they had two dogs that barked all night every night. Anyway, here's a maybe Charles Mansion story. One day back in '69 when I was in college in SoCal a friend and I were driving around tripping on LSD and we picked up a couple of hippy chicks who were hitch-hiking on PCH. They asked us if we wanted to go with them to a ranch at the end of Topanga Canyon Blvd and meet some guru dude who was like Jesus Christ and was going to save the world or something. They acted so weird and hoodoo'd that we ended up just letting them out of the car at PCH and Topanga Canyon Blvd.
robtempe 1 hour ago @gerry Lavelle Linda Ronstadt said she would see those (Manson) girls quite often, usually hitchhiking so your hunch is probably correct. Linda said "Topanga Canyon had a very dark undertone. A funky, dark place, with a lot of those communes; I always shied away from that stuff. And there were floods all the time."
Just curious, what did yours (and formerly Linda's) old house rent for per month back then? Right now the rent per month is $3750 and the purchase estimate is over 1 million. ( 954 Old Topanga Canyon Rd, Topanga, CA 90290 ) How long did you live there?
Gerry Lavelle 6 hours ago @robtempe The rent was $700.00. I lived there about eight months before the landlord evicted me and my girlfriend because the ceiling caught on fire from a funky pot belly stove that wasn't properly insulated. The landlord tried to blame us but I had called the Topanga fire chief over to inspect the damage and he noticed right away that there was no insulating buffer between the stove pipe and the wood ceiling. He said to call him when the landloard came over because he was pissed at the code violation.
When the landlord came over to inspect the damage he blamed us and we were going to have to pay for repairs. However, I called the fire chief and he came over and read the landlord the right act. But even though it wasn't our fault the landlord evicted us and kept our damage deposut. We ended moving elsewhere in Topanga.
I really liked living up there because I had lived in Colorado up in the mountains and I was used to driving back and forth down into the city from up in the canyons there. And then there all the musicians, artists and actors who lived up there -- it was a trip.
Tina Valencia 2 months ago Hey never talked about this gary hinman i never knew he was even a part of the tate labianca murders. Wow poor guy i hope that bobby dont get out of jail
Creepy Crawl with Sobaire 2 months ago Gary's murder was largely overlooked by the media. But it was one the main things that started the Helter Skelter murders. Thank you for watching and commenting. I will be doing a video about the Labianca murders soon.
Karen Lovett 1 year ago I'm surprised the house is still standing. A lot of neighbor's would have tried to have it destroyed.
Creepy Crawl with Sobaire 1 year ago It has had at least 2 owners since the murder. Thank you for watching and commenting.
Johano Radovis 1 year ago It's not. The original was a small two story camp. He was a local drug dealer and utilized his chemistry degree to fabricate drugs.
Creepy Crawl with Sobaire 1 year ago Wow! I wish I had known that !
Johano Radovis 1 year ago @creepy Crawl with Sobaire My niece has me digging up my momentos from time in the Simi Hills over 50 years ago..This is a photo of Ruby Pearl's suitcase vanity loaded with Spahn Movie Ranch black powder 'blank' ammo , guns, postcards, silver dollars that I purchased in May,1970. George didn't have money to feed the horses. Riders stayed away because Manson Family members were still at the Back Ranch House waiting for Charlie and the Family charges to be dismissed. I decided to be a freelance journalist and stayed on Frank Retz's property next door. Cappy Gilles was easy to interview and most coherent. Little Paul was viewed as a traitor as well as Brooks Poston. Don't forget, in November 1969 a member died by Russian Roulette in a members home in Venice? It was probably a murder on Charley's orders. I know the would have killed Susan Atkins for ratting in the first place. They were all as sharp as marbles. Not streetwise. Look at Beausoleil who drove the victims car with the murder weapon with APB's all over.
Creepy Crawl with Sobaire 1 year ago I don't see the photo posted. That is a lot of incredible information. I was surprised that Susan Atkins was murdered for blabbing. I knew about the Russian Roulette "accident." Wow! You have some stories I would love to hear. Sharp as marbles! Lmao! About their coherency..I would think there wasn't much. Charlie brain washed them using LSD, constant repetition and A Lot of fear. Thank you so much for all the information. I would really like to see your photos!
rolly doucet 2 months ago Hinman's misfortune was the result of having anything to do with the Manson hippie cult. Very sad, as he seems to be a guy who would never harm anyone.
Creepy Crawl with Sobaire 2 months ago I agree. Manson said they weren't hippies, they were "slippies". Thank you for watching and commenting.
cmmahoney21 1 month ago Yeah, they weren’t hippies because hippies are pacifists and obviously Charlie and at least some of his followers had no problem with violence. Charlie called them “slippies” because they slipped under the radar of society or slipped through the cracks of society. Not sure which. I’ve heard both.
Boo Hamilton 1 year ago (edited) Interesting
Creepy Crawl with Sobaire 1 year ago Most people forgot or don't know that Shorty Shea, see my video about him, and Gary Hinman were also murdered by the Manson Family. Thank you for watching and commenting!
Shaun Taylor Shaun Taylor 1 year ago (edited) It was the spark, but had nothing to do with that Helter Skelter crap. It was down to a bad drug deal for sure, nothing more.
Creepy Crawl with Sobaire 1 year ago I must disagree. The Labianca/Tate murders were intended to make the police think that the real killer of Gary was not Bobby Bousoliel , therefore the police would release Bobby. There were many factors contributing to the Helter Skelter murders. This is just one. You are correct about a bad drug deal being another. And Dennis Wilson taking, changing the lyrics but not giving Charlie any song writer credits was another. And Charlie's record deal that fell through was yet another. Everyone has a theory about Helter Skelter. After reading every autobiography that Family members put out, and watching countless interviews, this is mine.
cmmahoney21 1 month ago (edited) @creepy Crawl with Sobaire — I do think the Helter Skelter race war thing was one of the motives but only a small one. If it wasn’t a thing at all then Bobby wouldn’t have tried to make it look like the Black Panthers did it.
I don’t think Helter Skelter originally had anything to do with Hinman. The original motives for going after Hinman were wanting that inheritance money that they thought he had but he didn’t and the drug deal that went bad. I think Helter Skelter came in later not as a motive but as an attempt to blame the murder on the Black Panthers.
I don’t think that Charlie actually believed in Helter Skelter. But his followers did and they were scared. Fear is a great motivator. The Civil Rights riots, the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr, and the Watts riots in L.A. added believability to Helter Skelter. Charlie told The Family his prophecy of Helter Skelter. That scared them enough to get them to stay in the group. Charlie knows what to do. If we stay with him we will be safe in the desert and we will come out when it’s over. Charlie is the only one who can save us so we have to stay with him to be safe. If we leave the group and Helter Skelter comes we won’t survive.
The Tate/LaBianca murders had more than one motive. 1. Helter Skelter (Tate and LaBianca) 2. copycat of the Hinman murder to try to get Bobby out of jail (Tate and LaBianca) 3. Money. (Tate and LaBianca)The Family needed money. Mary Brunner was in jail and her bail was $600 so they needed money for that. They needed money to reimburse the Straight Satans for the bad drugs and money for Bernard Crowe (drug dealer) because Tex cheated him on a drug deal and Crowe wanted the money for the amount of drugs Tex took without paying for them. Tex said he’d bring Crowe the money but he never did and Crowe was threatening Charlie and The Family with bodily harm if he didn’t get the money. The Straight Satans were threatening to kill Charlie and some or all of The Family members if they didn’t get their money. Plus Tex had convinced Linda Kasabian to steal $5000 from a friend of her husband. And they were planning on hiding out in the desert once Helter Skelter started and they needed money to buy supplies. 4. Drugs/Money/Revenge/Knowledge of layout of future crime scene (Tate only). Tex Watson had lived in that house for a few months before Sharon and Roman lived there. I don’t know if Terry Melcher lived there then or not. Tex had also been to parties at that house and he knew the layout. Charlie had been to parties there too. Frykowsky and Jay Sebring were drug dealers as was Tex Watson. Tex was expecting new drugs to be at the Cielo Dr house. He wanted some but I guess he found out that there weren’t any or maybe they were lying and had hidden them. Who knows? They got $70 out of Abigail Folger’s purse and that’s all they got. Plus those who lived at the Cielo Dr house routinely cheated people on drug deals and Linda Kasabian was one of the ones who got cheated. 5. Revenge (LaBianca only). At one time Charlie and The Family lived in an RV in Harold True’s driveway which was next door to the LaBiancas. Someone called in noise complaints and police came out. Charlie believed that the LaBiancas were the ones who called in the noise complaints. Charlie and The Family apparently were able to steal the money they needed from the LaBiancas because neither Bernard Crowe nor the Straight Satans hurt or killed anyone.
As for Dennis Wilson stealing and changing the title and lyrics to Charlie’s song Cease to Exist and not giving Charlie writing credits and the fact that Terry Melcher decided not to sign Charlie to a recording contract, both of those things made Charlie angry and added to his overall assessment of his situation which boils down to the fact that Charlie wanted to be recognized for his songwriting, singing, and guitar playing. And none of the people he was playing his music for thought that his stuff would sell. Charlie allowed no changes to his songs. He hated criticism even if it was constructive. I don’t think these 2 things either together or alone would’ve been enough for him to order such a killing spree. But I think Charlie already knew that the killing spree was going to happen and these 2 events just added fuel to the fire but they weren’t actual motives.
Later in August after the Tate/ LaBianca murders there was another murder. Stunt man/ranch hand Donald “Shorty” Shea. The motive was revenge. Shea had been hired by someone to hang around The Family and report anything that looked criminal to the police. And he did that. He’s the one who called in the tip that caused the police to raid Spahn Ranch in October 1969 looking for stolen cars. Charlie suspected this and Steve Grogan, Bruce Davis, Tex, and Charlie all participated in killing him.
So to those who say Charlie never killed anyone here’s one that we know he participated in killing. There are probably more that we just don’t know about.
Charlie knew that Terry Melcher didn’t live in the Cielo Dr house anymore. He went over there in the summer of 1969 prior to the murders looking for Melcher. He was told that Melcher didn’t live there anymore. He saw that Sharon Tate lived there. He went to the guest house to ask the property owner if he knew where Melcher was living. The owner of the property Rudi Altobelli told Charlie that Melcher had moved out of the Cielo Dr house and was living at his mother’s beach house. Charlie or one of The Family members left a note on the front porch of the house where Melcher was living. So Charlie knew Melcher didn’t live on Cielo Dr anymore and he knew where Melcher did live. So Charlie didn’t send his followers to the wrong house. If Charlie had wanted Melcher or Dennis Wilson dead he would’ve sent his followers to carry that out. But he didn’t.
Creepy Crawl with Sobaire 1 month ago Wow! Thank you for your very informative reply. You mentioned things I was not aware of. You also mentioned things I am aware of, but since I do a all the work myself , research, editing and so forth, I had to make an abridged version. I didn't do that with my video on Shorty Shea and I made myself miserable. I must have gone up and back to his murder site 15 - 20 times. I would film, find more information, rewrite and re-film. Although, I think that video came our well, it took a lot out of me. I get obsessive trying to provide accurate and detailed information with my Manson Family videos. Thank you for watching and your extremely detailed comment. I really appreciate both.
cmmahoney21 1 month ago @creepy Crawl with Sobaire — I’m glad you found my long post to be helpful.
I can’t prove everything I say beyond a reasonable doubt. I don’t remember most of the sources where I got this piece and that piece of the story. Many pieces have been the same thing but with different sources. And there are plenty of people who will say I’m wrong about this, that, or the other thing. And they may be right. I have never proclaimed myself to be a guru on all things Charlie.and The Family. But I do know things.
I was only 22 months old when it happened so I was oblivious to it at the time. When I was 9 we were at my aunt’s house and my 19-year-old cousin had a copy of the book Helter Skelter. I was a bookworm and I read adult level books all the time. I picked it up and looked at the black-and-white photos that were in the middle. I realized that people had been murdered because the pictures had the outlines of where the bodies were. I asked my mother if I could read it and she said no.
The next time I ran across the book was at my cousin’s house. (Different cousin) I was 17. I asked my mother if I could read it and she said that I could and then I said that it was a long book and I wasn’t going to be able to finish it during the time that we were planning to stay there. My mother suggested that I ask my cousin if I could borrow it and then when I finished reading it I could mail it back to her. I didn’t want to go through all that hassle so I just didn’t read it.
When I was 25 I finally bought myself a copy of the book. And I read it. And it gave me nightmares. I would wake up screaming. In my dream I was always occupying the place of Abigail Folger. I remember running in the dream to the lawn while being chased by someone with an upraised knife. That would’ve been Patricia Krenwinkle. I didn’t really understand why I was always in the place of Abigail. But I think I figured it out. I was 25 at the time I read the book. Abigail was 25 at the time that she was killed. I don’t know if that explains anything or not.
I’ve since found out that Bugliosi’s book Helter Skelter was not “THE true crime story that the bookcover claims it is. There is some truth in it but there are also plenty of things that aren’t true. Bugliosi wasn’t too interested in the truth. He was interested in making sure that Charlie was convicted not just the girls and Tex. So Bugliosi had to twist the truth, fatten it up, embellish it, and fabricate lies. If Bugliosi couldn’t make the whole race war thing believable then he couldn’t tie Charlie to the crimes by saying that Charlie was a conspirator and that Charlie ordered his followers to do the murders.
There are a lot of books out there and the only one I’ve read is Helter Skelter. I have plans to read others starting with Tom O’Neill’s Chaos….
I’ve watched documentaries and videos and read articles so I know stuff but I want to know more.
I enjoyed watching your video and I’m subscribed to your channel. 😋
Creepy Crawl with Sobaire 3 weeks ago Thank you. You are correct. The book Helter Skelter is not accurate. My interest in The Manson Family began in a similar way. When I was really young, I found and read my Mom's copy of Helter Skelter. It changed me. It scared me. A few years later, I realized Spahn Ranch was about 3 miles from my house. I believe it burned in a huge fire in the late 70s or early 80s. As I got older, my curiosity grew and I have had an interest since. Thank you for subscribing. It's been awhile since I was there. I will probably make another video there in the near future. Rattlesnakes are rampant right now. So I am hesitant about going back at the moment.
