Not an original but worth a mention. Linda never recorded it and it was included on Randy Newman's highly acclaimed album Trouble in Paradise, 17 January 1983 but the video wasn't released until 2001.
Real Emotional Girl From the HBO special "Randy Newman At The Odeon", first broadcast December 1983. The concert was taped live at The Odeon nightclub/restaurant on the lower east side of New York.
Randy Newman is best enjoyed in an intimate setting, so this 1983 performance at New York's Odeon nightclub finds the curmudgeonly Newman in his element. Whether he's playing popular favorites like "I Love L.A." and "Short People" or testing new material for a small, appreciative audience, Newman is a congenial performer whose skill as a composer is perfectly matched to his playful, deep-cutting lyrics and wry, often melancholy vocal style. It's no small task to sing edgy, provocative songs like "Rednecks" or the hilariously satirical "Political Science" and still maintain a warm connection to the listener, but Newman does just that, and his hospitality is extended to guest performers Linda Ronstadt and Ry Cooder, who enhance the rich emotions of Newman's music. Woodstock director Michael Lindsay-Hogg captures the relaxed mood of the one-hour set, and despite audible hiss on the 2- and 5.1-channel audio, this recording conveys the essence of Randy Newman at his best. --Jeff Shannon
From the Back Cover In a performance at New York's legendary nightspot, Randy Newman at the Odeon with friends Linda Ronstadt and Ry Cooder, is an intimate and unforgettable evening of some of the most profoundly engaging and intelligent popular songs ever written. Randy Newman has received a Grammy, nominations for five Golden Glove Awards, 13 Oscar nominations, and the 2000 Billboard Century Award. His idiosyncratic songs about misfits, outcasts, charlatans, yuppies, rednecks and conmen have a wry, satiric edge and draw from musical traditions that stretch back to New Orleans R&B and Tin Pan Alley pop. Newman is a true American original whose music moves us all.
Song list includes: I Love L.A. Burn On, Big River Simon Smith and His Amazing Dancing Bear Marie Christmas in Capetown Short People Texas Girl at the Funeral of Her Father Linda Real Emotional Girl Rednecks Guilty Sail Away Mama Told Me Not to Come Let's Burn Down the Cornfield Political Science God's Song My Life is Good Rider in the Rain I Think It's Going to Rain Today Lonely at the Top
