Selena Gomez will play Linda Ronstadt in an upcoming biopic, Variety has confirmed. variety.com/t/selena-gomez/ variety.com/t/linda-ronstadt/
The pop singer and “Only Murders in the Building” star teased the role Tuesday night by posting a picture of Ronstadt’s 2013 memoir “Simple Dreams” on her Instagram story.
The music biopic is currently in pre-production, with producers including Ronstadt’s manager, John Boylan, and James Keach, who produced the 2019 documentary “Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice.”
No other casting has been announced.
Ronstadt is a country, rock ‘n’ roll and Latin music legend, with her 1970s albums “Heart Like a Wheel” and “Simple Dreams” reaching critical and commercial success and showcasing her versatility across genres. Throughout her career she has won 11 Grammys, and she was honored by both the Recording Academy and the Latin Recording Academy with Lifetime Achievement Awards.
Ronstadt and Gomez are both of Mexican descent. The latter has been nominated twice for a Golden Globe for her performance on Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building,” which she executive produces and stars in alongside Steve Martin and Martin Short. Gomez broke out as an actor on Disney’s “Wizards of Waverly Place” and achieved success as a music artist with hits like “Lose You to Love Me” and “Love You Like a Love Song.”
Ronstadt’s 2019 doc was directed by Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman and chronicled the artist’s nearly five-decade career and domination of the country-rock genre. In 2011, Ronstadt announced her retirement, later revealing she is no longer able to sing due to her progressive supranuclear palsy, which was originally mistaken for Parkinson’s.

“I have no words to describe my heart for this project,” Gomez, 31, wrote via her Instagram Story on Friday, January 19, reposting Deadline’s report about her casting. “Years of hoping this dream would become my reality. 💙.”
She continued in a follow-up post, “Love your heart and soul for life and music @lindaronstadtmusic.”
Gomez sparked speculation that she would play Ronstadt, 77, in a movie earlier this month, uploading an Instagram Story photo of herself reading the singer’s 2013 memoir, Feels Like Home. Multiple outlets subsequently confirmed that Gomez was cast in a biopic based on the book with David O. Gomez, for her part, has long been a fan of Ronstadt.
“It kind of reminds me a little of Linda Ronstadt, ’70s vibe,” Gomez said of her album Revival in a 2015 radio interview with Ryan Seacrest. “I always used to get told that I looked like her and I started listening to her music because of that.” www.usmagazine.com/stylish/news/selena-gome-revival-tour-style-w205780/ www.usmagazine.com/stylish/news/selena-gome-revival-tour-style-w205780/
During the sit-down, Gomez gushed that her favorite of Ronstadt’s songs is “When I Will Be Loved,” which came out in 1974.

Gomez got her big break as a child star, appearing on Barney & Friends before becoming a Disney Channel icon. “I started having a lot of fun with music and then touring was really fun,” Gomez said during a January appearance on the “SmartLess” podcast. “I was doing [Wizards of Waverly Place] at the same time and I just found it really fun so I just kept going. But the older I get, the more I’m kind of like, ‘I would like to find something to just settle on.’”
She added at the time, “I do feel like I have one more album in me, but I would probably choose acting.”

A lot of people welcomed the recent news that Selena Gomez will be portraying Arizona’s own Linda Ronstadt in an upcoming biopic — including singing Ronstadt’s songs. Critic Robrt Pela’s has a different take.
Linda Ronstadt Greenwich Entertainment
I called my friend Rauchine the other day, to ask what she thought about the news that Selena Gomez, one of her favorite singers, will be playing Linda Ronstadt, one of my favorite singers, in a movie about Ronstadt’s life.
Rauchine thought this was a good idea. Selena is a singer and an actor, she pointed out. She ought to be able to portray a famous singer pretty well.
Not according to a lot of Linda fans. I’d noticed a number of them carping about the casting on social media. Well, maybe not the casting so much as the fact that, instead of lip-synching to Ronstadt’s classic recordings, Gomez will be re-recording the singer’s biggest hits for the movie, which is only in pre-production.
It’s been done before in rock-n-roll movies — most recently in “Rocketman,” the Elton John biopic, and memorably by Sissy Spacek in “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” and Beverly D’Angelo in that movie about Patsy Cline.
But those actors were not superstar singers when they played one.
It was probably mostly old people complaining about this, Rauchine guessed. She thought they wanted the movie to be more about Linda and less about Selena. By “old people,” I guessed she meant me and my contemporaries, people who grew up listening to Linda Ronstadt, back when she ruled the radio airwaves, when all her albums and singles went gold. When she was the queen of rock music.
Rauchine referred to this as gatekeeping, something I thought sounded familiar. She suggested that Linda Ronstadt fans didn’t want to share their singer with young people who might not appreciate her the way they did.
“Maybe they don’t like that a lot of people will go see this movie to see Selena, and not because it’s about Linda Ronstadt,” Rauchine thought. “I mean, that’s why I’ll see that movie when it comes out.”
Rauchine, who’s a 24-year-old actor living in Manhattan, seemed to think this was silly. She said that people her age might know of Linda Ronstadt, but probably couldn’t name one of her songs. That would change, she thought, once young Selena fans went to see her playing Linda in her newest movie. Plus, she said again, Selena can actually sing.
Can she? After we hung up, I listened to a couple dozen Selena songs. Maybe because I’m an old person, everything I heard sounded like pretty much every other contemporary pop song I’ve heard in the last 20 years: A robotic, vocodered female voice singing over a loop of mechanized hand claps.
I’d read that Linda Ronstadt has agreed that Selena Gomez, who vaguely resembles her and is, like Ronstadt, Mexican American, should play her in the movie, which will be directed by David O. Russell of "Silver Linings Playbook" fame. I want that to be enough for me, a lifelong Linda fan: Linda Ronstadt approves.
While I wait for the Ronstadt biopic to be made, I’ll return to my new Selena Spotify playlist, hoping to hear something that doesn’t sound like R2D2 chanting to a click track. And straining for gratitude that someone will be singing Linda Ronstadt songs in a movie that will introduce her to a whole new generation.

Selena Gomez Will Star as Linda Ronstadt in a Biopic www.elle.com/culture/movies-tv/a46343106/selena-gomez-linda-ronstadt-movie-date-cast-rumors-news/ BY ERICA GONZALESPUBLISHED: JAN 10, 2024 4:45 PM EST

Selena Gomez just added a new project to her ever-growing resume. The pop star and beauty mogul will star in as music legend Linda Ronstadt in an upcoming biopic.
Gomez hinted at the news prior to the announcement, posting a photo of herself reading Ronstadt’s memoir, Simple Dreams, on her Instagram Story. Rolling Stone confirmed her casting shortly after. www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/selena-gomez-linda-ronstadt-biopic-1234944132/
Ronstadt, known for songs like “You’re No Good” and “I Can’t Help It (If I’m Still In Love With You),” has 11 Grammys and is a trailblazer in rock, country, and Latin music. Both she and Gomez have Mexican heritage.

Rolling Stone reports that the film is still in pre-production (so it’s still too early to predict the release date) and no other casting announcements have been made. Ronstadt’s manager, John Boylan, and James Keach, a producer on 2019’s Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice documentary, are co-producing. It’s still unclear what Ronstadt’s personal involvement in the film will be.
Gomez seemed to tease the role as early as August 2023, posting photos of the singer and her quote, “The smell of the carpet in a hotel room is the same everywhere,” on Instagram. At the time, rumors were already bubbling up that she would play Ronstadt on screen.

The news comes after Gomez hinted at retiring from music after her next album. “I do feel like I have one more album in me, but I would probably choose acting,” she said on the podcast SmartLess. ew.com/selena-gomez-may-retire-from-music-after-next-album-8421737#:~:text=The%20Grammy%2Dwinning%20songstress%2C%20who,her%20film%20and%20television%20career.

Selena Gomez’s latest movie role has been years in the making.
Gomez, 31, is set to play legendary singer Linda Ronstadt in an upcoming biopic. The film, currently in preproduction, will be produced by Ronstadt’s manager, John Boylan, and James Keach, who produced the 2019 documentary Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice, per a Wednesday, January 10, report from Variety.
While some Ronstadt fans were surprised by the casting news, Gomez has previously opened up about her love for the “You’re No Good” singer. During a September 2015 interview with Ryan Seacrest, Gomez pointed to Ronstadt, 77, as an inspiration for the cover of her album Revival. “It kind of reminds me a little of Linda Ronstadt, ’70s vibe,” Gomez said. “I always used to get told that I looked like her and I started listening to her music because of that.”
At the time, the Disney Channel alum noted that her favorite song of Ronstadt’s is the 1974 track “When Will I Be Loved.”
Many of Gomez’s fans, a.k.a. Selenators, took to social media after the casting news to share their excitement. “Selena Gomez will play Linda Ronstadt in her upcoming biopic, we are so back,” one fan captioned a video featuring comparisons of Gomez and Ronstadt’s likeness via X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday.
Sharing a pic of a young Ronstadt, another fan wrote, “She looked more like Selena Gomez than Selena Gomez looks like Selena Gomez.”
In addition to calling Gomez a “fantastic choice” and “perfect” for the role, many fans shared their hopes that her portrayal of Ronstadt could earn her some awards buzz.

“Selena is finally coming for her Oscars,” one fan tweeted on Wednesday, while another user wrote, “Oscar nominee Selena Gomez sounds so good.”
Gomez’s Only Murders in the Building costar Steve Martin also congratulated her on her next big gig via X. “This should be outstanding,” Martin, 78, captioned an article about the biopic.
While many are excited to see Gomez bring Ronstadt to life on the big screen, others are not so pleased. “Just listened to the first song on the Linda Ronstadt Essentials playlist … good luck, Selena, this will not be easy for you!” one X user stated. Another skeptic asked, “Who’s gonna sing?”
It’s still unknown whether Gomez will sing in the film, though some fans hope Ronstadt’s voice will be used instead. “As long as Linda’s actual vocals are used,” one social media user tweeted in reaction to the casting. “Selena just doesn’t have the chops to match her vocally.”

Another person said that Gomez may resemble Ronstadt but noted, “That’s where the comparison stops.”
Ronstadt herself has not publicly commented on the casting, but TMZ reported on Wednesday that the 11-time Grammy winner allegedly gave Gomez’s casting her personal stamp of approval. The outlet also claimed that she and the “Rare” singer had met at her home a few months ago. www.tmz.com/2024/01/10/selena-gomez-cast-play-portray-linda-ronstadt-approve-new-biopic-film/
Gomez, for her part, hinted at her new role on Tuesday, January 9, by sharing a pic of herself reading Ronstadt’s 2013 book, Simple Dreams: A Musical Memoir, via her Instagram Story. The next day, Gomez announced she would be taking a break from social media to focus “on what really matters.” Hours later, however, she returned to platform to share a video of herself cooking with Gordon Ramsay. www.usmagazine.com/celebrity-news/news/selena-gomez-announces-another-social-media-break/ www.usmagazine.com/celebrity-news/news/selena-gomez-returns-to-social-media-hours-after-announcing-break/

Linda Ronstadt retired from music on August 23, 2013, citing health conditions that prevented her from singing. She attributed her declining health to a tick bite and a botched shoulder operation that caused her hands to tremble. Initially, she believed it was a muscular or mechanical issue, leading to an eight-year delay in consulting a neurologist. To her surprise, the neurologist’s diagnosis revealed a form of Parkinson’s called progressive supranuclear palsy. After four decades of hits and over 100 million records sold, Ronstadt reluctantly acknowledged that she could no longer sing.
Even though we can now only listen to Ronstadt’s mezzo-soprano voice on her many recordings, the singer’s legacy and impact on pop culture continue to thrive. Selena Gomez recently announced on Instagram that she will star in the first biopic about Ronstadt, sharing her journey as a singer of Mexican ancestry. David O. Russell (Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle) will direct, but no other details have been revealed. english.elpais.com/culture/2023-01-19/selena-gomez-is-fed-up-with-comments-about-her-weight-im-a-little-bit-big-right-now-because-i-enjoyed-myself-during-the-holidays.html

The acting challenge ahead for the star of Only Murders in the Building is immense. Condensing the remarkable life of the singer who won eleven Grammy Awards and is the only woman to have five consecutive platinum albums, into a two-hour film seems almost as daunting as covering Ronstadt’s incredible range of musical genres and styles. The versatile singer could do it all — rock, pop, opera, country, jazz and even Broadway. Known for hits like Blue Bayou, You’re No Good, and Long Long Time (featured in The Last of Us TV series), Ronstadt knew from a young age that she wanted to be a singer instead of a nurse like many of her Tucson friends. When asked how she was so sure about her calling, Ronstadt said, “People sing for many of the same reasons the birds sing. They sing for a mate, to claim their territory, or simply to give voice to the delight of being alive on a beautiful day.” english.elpais.com/culture/2023-08-10/only-murders-in-the-building-knows-how-to-make-the-most-of-meryl-streep.html
Linda Ronstadt exemplifies the struggles, desires and joys of a generation. Raised in a music-loving family, her father was a frustrated singer who was a great inspiration for his daughter. Some of her earliest songs were the same ones he sang in the family-owned hardware store. Because of anti-Mexican racism in Arizona, she was strictly forbidden to speak Spanish in school. Yet the all-Spanish album she recorded late in her career, Canciones de mi padre (Songs of My Father, in English), was very successful. In an interview with The New York Times, Ronstadt said she felt racism in America was getting worse, not better. english.elpais.com/culture/2023-04-07/the-last-of-us-why-linda-ronstadt-wont-get-a-cent-for-her-music-being-used-in-hbos-hit-show.html
Ronstadt’s childhood experiences had a profound impact, shaping her into one of the most outspoken activists for social justice in the United States over the past 50 years. She has a special passion for migrant rights and fearlessly confronts conservative forces even if it could harm her career. Ronstadt is especially hostile toward Donald Trump and will only refer to him as “the 45th president of the United States.” “I don’t say his name because he’s like the bad guy in Harry Potter — Voldemort.”

Ronstadt was always rebellious. At the age of 12, she turned down a marriage proposal from a Mexican kid named Mario, who was five years her senior. Two years later, Ronstadt started a group with her siblings, Peter and Gretchen, and performed in Tucson cafés. She dropped out of college after one term and headed to Los Angeles to pursue her dream at the age of 18. The singer who started out with only $25 a week for room and board now boasts a fortune of approximately $130 million.
After making a name for herself as part of the folk rock trio The Stone Poneys, Ronstadt launched a stellar career as a solo artist. She didn’t enjoy life on the road, but no one could fill stadiums and sell records in the late 60s and early 70s like Linda Ronstadt. Sharing her stories was her way of conquering stage fright that was often so severe she once hoped to get run over by a bus to avoid performing. The world of rock & roll in that era was a nightmare for women pursuing independent careers. Ronstadt’s memoirs recount numerous incidents of sexual harassment, including one involving a drunken Jim Morrison when she opened for The Doors. Music industry executives tried to blackmail her into sexual favors. Despite it all, Ronstadt remained strong. “There are predators all around and you have to be alert,” wrote Ronstadt.

She was an icon and a reluctant sex symbol, posing in red lingerie for photographer Annie Leibovitz on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine in 1976. Ronstadt later said Rolling Stone had used that cover against her wishes, as she always rejected the sex-symbol label and the dehumanization of media fame. “For me, it was tough to wear anything more than Levis and a baggy sweater — like I was dressed to clean someone’s house.” She never married, but her love live included former California Governor Jerry Brown, Mick Jagger, Robert Plant, Bill Murray, Jim Carrey and George Lucas (to whom she was once engaged). After her relationship with Lucas ended in the late 1980s, Ronstadt adopted a daughter, Mary Clementine, and later a son named Carlos. As a mother with a fading voice, Ronstadt gradually stepped back from the stage in the early 2000s. Although her last recording was in 2010, the renowned ‘first lady of rock’ continues to sing. During one of her recent public appearances in 2022, Ronstadt said, “Though it’s not quite the same... I can still sing in my mind.”

A metaphor for Linda's life and career after leaving her idyllic childhood home in Tucson Arizona is this prophetic Ronstadt song High Muddy Water:
Yes and now I'll swim ashore For I must make it Although I'm up to my neck In high muddy water
Now the water's deep and wide Can't hold out long this way If I could spend a time Perhaps I'd find a way
So now I'll swim ashore For I must make it Although I'm up to my neck In high muddy water
Now I see the distance stir And I hear reckless sound And something seems to say well I'm bound for higher ground
So now I'll swim ashore For I must make it Although I'm up to my neck In high muddy water
Now the sun has risen late But I'm safe at last my friend Deep water was my pain But now I've reached the end
Yes now I'll swim ashore And I know I'll make it Although I'm up to my neck In high muddy water
The Stone Poneys' only charting success from their final album (April 1968) was the single "Up to My Neck in High Muddy Water", which reached No. 93 on the Billboard Hot 100. The Greenbriar Boys had originally recorded the song for their 1966 album Better Late than Never![5] – the album that also introduced Ronstadt and the band to the Mike Nesmith song "Different Drum", their major hit single from Evergreen, Volume 2. ....wikicompanion threads
